How Generative AI can Augment Human Creativity

How Generative AI can Augment Human Creativity

We hear so much about GenAI’s ability to hyper-speed productivity and shorten the innovation cycle and time to market.

But I find its expansive impact on human creativity more intriguing. If you look at last summer’s actors strike in the U.S, AI was described as a threat to original creativity and potentially destroying an entire industry. (If you want to see the argument further explained, check out the Netflix drama ‘Black Mirror’ and the episode ‘Joan is Awful’). For the first time since 1960, both the actors and screenwriters’ guilds were on strike, and Hollywood was nearly gridlocked.

But on the other side, as an example, AI’s ability to create new foods by analyzing volumes of culinary data knows no limit. There’s a semi-famous story about Chilean plant-based food maker NotCo shaking up the mayonnaise industry by using AI to create new, plant-based formulas. Who knew, right?

AI’s potential to expand our creative pallets (literally and figuratively) is unlimited. Education, medicine, even dating - all manners of research and discovery will be accelerated.

AI’s mission and design is to learn and create. The technology is here, but how can we use it to satisfy our curiosities and enhance creativity – not replace it?

Harvard Business School published an exploration of AI’s potential to augment human creativity to overcome four challenges of democratizing innovation:

?1.????? Evaluation overload – floods of good ideas are nearly impossible to merge, evaluate and develop; AI can curate, develop and measure ideas efficiently

2.????? The ‘expertise curse’ – experts lean towards ideas in the ‘feasible’ category; AI can push novel and disruptive ideas

3.????? Navigating messiness – real expertise is required to translate messy ideas into coherent concepts; AI is the guide

4.????? Clarity – those floods of good ideas and insights are difficult to parse; AI can narrow and prioritize

?Check out this article and ask yourself – where do you stand on the AI debate? ?Chat GPT is a great research tool and world class aggregator. It’s a great source for inspiration, and foundational insights. I’ve seen it used across different teams and see its impact on productivity.

I would love to hear how you envision using AI to accelerate and augment your own creativity, whether in network design, Go-To-Market, or the next flavor of your favorite condiment ??…

AI is a huge subject and debate among artists right now. Some are fearful that AI will replace artists as people seek cheaper alternatives for creative work. However, at least in the visual arts, I find that it is pretty much input/output. I have attempted to use AI to create images I visualized or have created beforehand, and it is difficult to make it create work that comes close to what I envisioned. I have heard that when companies use so-called AI artists, (People who specialize in generating AI art) they have difficulty with revisions and the creative process that goes along with creating visual works. For example, I might want a logo to look a certain way and I get something close to it with AI-generated art. But after that point, unless an actual human artist intervenes to edit and perfect it, it remains shoddy work. Yet, there are some artists who are advocating using AI to augment and speed up their flow. For example, I might want to create a cabin in the trees. I can enter a rough sketch into AI and it will generate a detailed version of my work. I can then go in and edit to create a final version that is mine. I do not worry about rendering individual trees or grass but let AI do that tedious work for me.

Amazing how we all see AI in our own world views. Besides my work related applications, as a meteorology enthusiast I am amazed how far AI-based weather forecasting models have already come. Given a single, global data set of initial surface and atmosphere conditions - these AI weather forecast models already realize amazing accuracy out to 10 days. These AI models leverage a data driven approach instead of the conventional numerical models that rely on math/science equations. We may not recognize weather forecasting and its impact in just a few short years.

Gracias Bruce for your insight, I tried a new AI App that helps you analyze plants in order to see why they are not growing or why they are dying.......You take a picture and then the AI sends his recommendation based on that , although impressive (Since I don't have absolutely any idea what was wrong with some of my garden plants) the AI sent me a ton of information that although interesting it did not help me to solve the problem, it just provide me a list of possible causes and best effort recommendations but definitely did not zoom in the issue nor help me with my plants, deleted the app and asked a professional gardener to help me with my plants, in one week they were alive and kicking again! So - AI yes, how do we use it should come with a warning tag to not let everything be done with these ideas/information......at the end we are the ones using it as any other tool to make our lives better.

Bruce, interested to know if you used AI to write this (partially or wholly)? AI is an amazing advancement and your thoughts ring true to me. However, with great power comes great responsibility. I fear how AI will also advance evil doers and create real problems throughout the world. It is hard to tell the future, but easy to see the possibilities. Praying for good to win!
