With each new generation comes a shift in priority and cultural norms. We have lunged from long-term company loyalty to self-driven work styles. Comfort and control have replaced predictability. This leaves room for thought; how are Gez Z going to contour our new working norm?

Gen Z, born roughly between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, is having a significant impact on the workplace as they enter the workforce in larger numbers. Here are some ways in which Gen Z is influencing the workplace:


1. Technological fluency: Gen Z is the first generation to grow up entirely in the digital age, so they are highly tech-savvy. They bring a deep understanding of technology and digital tools, which can help modernize and streamline work processes. Their fluency with social media, smartphones, and other digital platforms can also bring fresh perspectives on marketing and communication strategies.


2. Emphasis on work-life balance: Gen Z places a high value on work-life balance. They prioritize flexibility in their work arrangements and seek opportunities for personal growth and fulfillment. This generation is more likely to value experiences and well-being over simply climbing the corporate ladder. As a result, they are pushing for flexible work schedules, remote work options, and a focus on mental health and wellness initiatives in the workplace.


3. Diversity and inclusion: Gen Z is known for its strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. They value equality and are more likely to advocate for representation and inclusivity in the workplace. Gen Z employees expect their employers to create a diverse and inclusive environment that welcomes individuals from various backgrounds, cultures, and identities.


4. Entrepreneurial mindset: Many Gen Z individuals possess an entrepreneurial mindset. They are ambitious and seek opportunities for growth and advancement. Gen Z employees are often willing to take on new challenges and responsibilities. They are also more likely to prioritize learning and development opportunities, seeking out employers who offer ongoing training and support for career advancement.


5. Collaborative work style: Gen Z grew up in an era of social media and online collaboration. They are accustomed to working in teams and value collaborative work environments. They are more likely to seek out opportunities for teamwork, knowledge sharing, and open communication. This generation is comfortable working with colleagues from different backgrounds and disciplines, fostering innovation through collaboration.


6. Desire for purposeful work: Gen Z is driven by a desire to make a positive impact on society. They are more likely to seek out organizations that align with their values and prioritize social responsibility. Gen Z employees want to work for companies that contribute to social causes, have a clear mission, and demonstrate a commitment to sustainability.


7. Digital communication preferences: Gen Z's communication preferences are primarily digital. They prefer instant messaging, video conferencing, and collaborative digital tools over traditional forms of communication like email or phone calls. As a result, they are influencing workplace communication by encouraging the adoption of efficient and real-time digital communication channels.

8. Assertiveness: Previous generations held job security to a high regard, and were therefore more likely to endure undesirable circumstances in order to maintain a stable income. With a strong belief in boundaries, Gen Z don't shy away from vocalising their requests and standards. Moreover, they have fewer traditional beliefs about hierarchy and therefore are unafraid to professionally challenge power figures.
