How Garware's rockfall protection is changing the Geo synthetic industry with its rockfall barrier protection solution

Efficient transportation of goods and commodities across a country is crucial for economic growth. It makes trade easier, helps industries thrive, and ensures resources reach markets on time.? Effective connectivity enables regions, especially socially backward areas, to grow and integrate with the rest of the nation. Roads and railways, the preferred modes of transport, often pass through diverse terrains, including mountainous regions. These challenging landscapes frequently pose hazards such as rockfalls, especially during the monsoon season. Rockfalls not only endanger human life and property but also disrupt the smooth operation of traffic, thereby impacting the overall efficiency of transportation systems.

To address these challenges and enhance infrastructure safety, it is crucial to implement measures that protect roads and railways from rockfalls. Our rockfall protection nets stand out as a reliable option. These nets are particularly effective for securing steep cuttings in areas with limited space. The use of such systems ensures the safety of commuters and the uninterrupted flow of traffic.

What are rockfalls and why are they dangerous?

Rockfalls occur when fragments of rock break away from a steep surface and tumble down due to gravity. This is common in hilly or mountainous terrains and is often triggered by natural events such as heavy rainfall or earthquakes. Human activities, such as construction or mining, can also destabilise rock formations, increasing the risk of rockfalls.

The consequences of rockfalls can be severe:

  1. Threat to Human Lives: Rockfalls can cause injuries or fatalities to individuals travelling through the affected areas.
  2. Damage to Infrastructure: Falling rocks can damage roads, railways, and associated structures, leading to costly repairs and maintenance.
  3. Disruption of Transport: Rockfalls can block transportation routes, causing delays and economic losses.
  4. Environmental Impact: In some cases, rockfalls can disrupt natural ecosystems, affecting flora and fauna in the region.

The role of our rockfall protection nets

Rockfall protection nets are an effective solution to mitigate the risks posed by rockfalls. These nets are designed to contain falling rocks, preventing them from reaching transportation routes or inhabited areas. By securing unstable rock surfaces, they provide a long-term solution for safeguarding infrastructure.

There are two primary systems of rockfall protection offered to suit varying site conditions:

  1. Galvanised Steel Wire Ropenet (GSWR)
  2. GSWR Combined with Chain Link Mesh or Hexagonal Double Twisted Wire Mesh

1. Galvanised Steel Wire Ropenet (GSWR)

GSWR is a patented system jointly developed by Garware Technical Fibres Ltd. and Konkan Railway Corporation Limited. It is constructed from high-strength galvanised steel wire ropes with a minimum breaking strength of 4.5 tonnes. The system is designed to have a lifespan of over 30 years, ensuring durability and reliability.

Features of GSWR

●?????? High-strength Material: The steel wire ropes used in GSWR are capable of withstanding significant forces, making them ideal for retaining large boulders.

●?????? Innovative Design: The intersections of the vertical and horizontal chords are secured with specially designed clamps, while adjacent nets are connected using spiral springs.

●?????? Customisation: The system can be tailored to suit specific site requirements, with aperture sizes ranging from 300 mm to 600 mm and tensile strengths between 6.7 tonnes and 12.5 tonnes.

How GSWR Works?

The GSWR system consists of two sections:

a.????? Upper Hang Portion: This section, featuring only vertical chords, is used for anchoring.

  1. Lower Net Portion: This section includes both vertical and horizontal chords, effectively retaining falling rocks.

By selecting the appropriate aperture size and lengths for the hang and net portions, the GSWR can be adapted to meet the needs of different terrains and rock sizes.

2. GSWR combined with chain link mesh or hexagonal double twisted wire mesh

For areas where boulder sizes vary significantly, combining GSWR with chain link mesh or hexagonal double twisted wire mesh provides an optimal solution. This system is particularly effective for retaining smaller rocks, thanks to the finer aperture sizes of the additional mesh layer.

Features of the combined system

●?????? Enhanced Retention: The hexagonal double twisted wire mesh, with aperture openings of 80 mm to 120 mm, effectively contains smaller rocks.

●?????? Layered Protection: The additional mesh is laid below the GSWR, providing comprehensive coverage and added strength.
