How is a game jam like a Flying Karamazov Brother?

Many years ago, I went to see the Flying Karamazov Brothers - who are absolutely hilarious and you should go see them. Part of their act is that they will juggle any three things thrown to them by the audience. People tossed them a three-ring binder, a chainsaw and a roll of duct tape. Not being stupid, they taped over the teeth of the saw, and then they juggled.

What does this have to do with the Global Gam Jam?

We decided to participate this year and my friend, Tina, who is going to be on our team, is blind, and we have been talking for a long time about doing a game that children with visual impairments could play to learn math, but that would have a universal design so that it would be equally fun and playable by sighted kids.

At 7 Generation Games, we have been making games for the past several months using primary sources from the Library of Congress. This cohort of teachers wanted to do a game around the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Then, this week, we found out that the theme of this year's game jam is bubbles.

So, here are the things we need to combine in our game:

  • Accessible to children with visual impairments
  • Playable and fun for kids regardless of vision
  • Teaches math
  • Includes primary sources
  • Lewis and Clark
  • Bubbles

I believe I have come up with an idea. We'll be starting on it Friday at Glitch City. In the meantime, meet our hero , Noah.
