Have you heard from your manager “increase your visibility in office?”
Visibility is to get a spotlight on your contributions, so you can tap the right opportunities at the company. And getting that recognition doesn’t hurt if done in the right manner.
Let us look at some simple ways in which you can gain visibility -
1) Going beyond Job description – Do not just aim to complete the given task by your manager or fulfill the responsibilities mentioned in your JD. Take initiative and ask your manager to give you challenging projects. Take up projects which will help you learn new aspects and get involved in processes. Discuss these with your manager. Specifically ask for high-visibility projects, which conveys that you are looking to grow in your profile.
2) Speak up – Take the opportunity to represent your team in inter-department meetings, and present the project. If you are attending a meeting, take a chance to speak up and contribute, making sure that contribution is value-adding. Don’t you also remember the employee who always has something good to add to the meeting?
3) Events – Be a part of cultural, annual, or any event happening, or even better, organize one. Take active participation in committees or clubs, like a book club, which will also help you network in your organization with people from other departments.
4) Work on Emails – Today maximum communications happen via email, so that’s one way of getting that recognition. Make your email value-adding and interesting, be it with your language, structuring, or anything unique that you can do.
5) People skill – 1 quality a leader is expected to possess is people skill, so develop that. Network with people from different departments, who are not even connected with your profile. Take a chance to mentor a newcomer. Praise other's contributions you found valuable. Bottomline- let people know you and remember you.
These are simple, effective steps, but require a lot of dedication, consistency, and authenticity for a positive outcome.
Coming on the radar of your company, with the right steps, is the best way to get visibility and get your chances high for promotion. You have to be seen to be remembered.
All the best and do share your experience.
