These are the headlines we have been reading for the last two months and to be honest, things are not going to get better for a while. The fact is, COVID -19 has caused havoc in the job markets. Not being able to physically meet with companies for interviews is just one small aspect of the problem, and the behaviour of companies and candidates is quickly shifting to accommodate virtual interviews.

The larger issue is that, for most organizations, COVID - 19 has caused a disruption in the generation of their income and revenue. This is a serious issue and when the panic passes, it will be time for solutions and people offering solutions will be the first to move up the corporate ladder. In fact, many people will move into better roles than they are currently in.

When the time comes, you have to understand that the journey of job search, application and interviews is going to be extremely important and this is largely a blind journey because you don’t know who your competition is and what their qualifications are. Add to this, the pressure of only one person getting hired! It’s not exactly a rosy picture, right?

This is exactly why you need to gain an edge in your career. The more effort you put in, the better your results will be.

What can you do to gain that extra edge in your career? What effort can you put that will give you the best results?

Now, I know there is plenty of information available on how you can do things better and gain that much-needed edge but the question is, who do you believe? With all that knowledge, there are also a lot of opinions in the mix which only adds to the confusion and uncertainty.

It is important to spend your time wisely so you not only acquire the right advantages as a candidate but also learn how to market those advantages to companies where your unique strengths and abilities can have a significant impact.

During this period, when most people are quarantined, the best way to spend your time is to up-skill yourself and that is exactly what everyone seems to be doing. People are taking certification courses in various disciplines such as AI and Machine Learning, making videos and increasing their social media reach, and marketing themselves in every possible way. The choices are endless! So, what should you do?

I believe there are three things you can do that cost you no money. You just have to find the time and the inclination to develop these three skills.

  1. LEARN TO INTERVIEW BETTER

Getting just a little bit better at interviews is one of the best things you can do for yourself. For the amount of time you spend in developing this skill, it proves to be of great value. Unfortunately, people spend more time preparing their dinner than they do when prepping for an interview. One reason for this lack of preparation could be fear. Fear often creeps in when the stakes are high, closely followed by procrastination. The truth is, when it comes to preparing for a job interview, procrastination is normal. Which means that if you do prepare and put in the time and effort, you are already giving yourself an edge over your competition. Employers rarely complain about too many great-performing interviewees to choose from. So for those who push a little harder than the rest, success at interviews is there for the taking.

The best preparation consists of finding heartfelt answers born of sincerity to certain key questions and it’s not like there are so many questions that they all cannot be mastered by the average person in a fairly brief time.

  1. TAKE A PERSONALITY TEST

There are so many personality tests available on the internet that you can take and benefit from. The reason I ask you to take a personality test is that it will help you understand your actions better. These tests will help you bring order to your thoughts and behaviour. Moreover, they can help you discover your core professional strengths so you can target opportunities that match your core competencies. When your job allows you to use your strengths, the level of satisfaction you derive from your work will be much higher, allowing you to experience a whole new level of enthusiasm which will lead to higher meaning and thereby the development of commitment. These tests cost you nothing and open up a whole world of possibilities that you can explore.

  1. ATTEND A FREE MASTERCLASS

Having been shut indoors to prevent the spread of at COVID - 19, a lot of free information has cropped up on the internet in the form of webinars and masterclasses. Use these to your advantage! Find sessions that are offering information on career management and the evolving job search processes. The hiring process for companies is rapidly changing and it is imperative that you keep up with what the latest trends are. The traditional job hunting process is no longer relevant, there are new hacks, tips & tricks available at your fingertips, which will keep you informed of the changes and how to look for the best opportunities and use them to your benefit.

The crisis that the COVID - 19 pandemic has proved to be is quite scary and obviously, it is not your fault that the world you are faced with is in this situation, and very honestly, most things are not in your control; you cannot change or undo the havoc this pandemic has caused. The only thing you can control is your response to this situation. The ability to determine the right response and then apply it will help you emerge a winner from this crisis and the right masterclass can show you how.

This is where I would like to invite you to my masterclass where I will show everything that you can do to determine and apply the response which will maximize your candidacy and ensure that you are in the 1% who will come out on top, as the winner from this difficult time.
