How to Gain a Competitive Edge in the Workplace
Flourishing Workplace
Building Cultures That Support Overall Wellbeing, Sustain Psychological Safety, and Strengthen Organizational Outcomes.
Rosalyn Fung, M.Sc. I really believe in continuing to grow, evolve, and expand. As leaders, this process always starts with ourselves. It’s the belief in continual and never-ending growth. This is important because it’s the philosophy that will give you a competitive edge in the workplace. It’s about always asking yourself what the next step is and what else is possible for you, your team, and your organization. But it all comes down to one single (but very powerful) attribute…
Understanding Your Purpose
Many people think their purpose is to love, serve, and support others. And yes, those are important; however, sometimes, those ideals (while noble) are a little too vague. So, it becomes about asking yourself: How are you here to serve? Often, our purpose is manifested from our pain. For example, I know for myself that it always felt like I wasn’t good enough.?
Things always looked perfect on the outside. However, on the inside, I was struggling with feeling like I was worthy. And it was because I felt like I was valued more for my doing-ness rather than my being-ness. That manifested in me being a perfectionist and an overachiever.?
But it didn’t take long to learn that that wasn’t working for me. I had to make a mindset shift and realize I wasn’t being authentic to myself. I was confident on the outside, but my self-value didn’t match that confidence on the inside. You can have a lot of confidence but low self-esteem.?
Confidence is dependent. For example, am I confident to cut my kid’s hair? Absolutely not. Don’t give me a pair of scissors. But am I confident I can learn from a professional how to cut my kid’s hair? You bet! That I can do.?
Valuing Yourself and Learning to Innovate
Self-esteem is about the value you hold of yourself, and this has to come from within. One powerful idea that you need to understand is that you are already—as you are—worthy of living your purpose.
It’s really all about gaining clarity on what that purpose is. For example, today, my purpose is to help others create and do business from a genuine place so that they can have what they desire. And it’s from this place that we can create and be in service. So, now, coming back to the innovation pieces. We want to look at how we can do something that is different and better.
What does this look like from a practical standpoint? Well, for example, I was able to become the first psychologist in Alberta to create an online program back in 2015 because I saw there was a gap. So, I jumped on that opportunity to create something new and unique to fill that void. Doing things differently often requires a shift in our mindset and best practice routines.
Your Ideas, Dreams, and Gifts
So, I want you to think about things that could be done better or differently. And this is important because the things that catch your attention and gnaw at you are usually the things that your gifts are supposed to serve.?

Your ideas, your dreams… They’re in you because they’re for you. Birth them out into the world because you’re worth it—you were made for this. This is where innovation starts. As leaders, we need to be more innovative.
Many times, leaders seek my coaching because they’re growing spiritually. As a result, they want to continue in that evolution and understand themselves and the world around them on a deeper level. They want to tap into more of their energy and transfer more of that energy into their work.?
Even after doing a lot of mindset work, they still seek more because they understand that there’s more to them than just their physical vessel. That’s one way they bring more of their brilliance into the workplace, ultimately bringing even more creative ideas and innovation to inspire their team.?
So, I want to invite you to consider your next level. What does that look like for you? Is it in the spiritual, social, personal, or professional realms? Whatever you feel called to at this moment in your life because that’s your next level for your innovation.
