How to Gain Clarity

How to Gain Clarity

Clarity is challenging to gain and easy to lose. If there is anything most people need in life or work, it is clarity.

Recently, I have been asking clients the following question: “What exactly are you trying to accomplish in your business?” Surprisingly, many leaders do not know how to respond. Sometimes, I have people respond by saying, “I’ve never really thought about it.”

Do you find yourself working hard without clarity? Without clarity, your activity lacks purpose. Moreover, an unclear goal is very difficult to reach.

Use these two insights to help you reach clarity!

First, determine what you are attempting to do. You cannot accomplish something if you are unclear what it is. List the "what." If you are builder, your goal might be to build 4 houses this year. If you are a doctor, you goal might be to provide quality care for your patients, earn a certain level of income and have a quality lifestyle.

Second, decide why you do things. The "why" involves motivation. Motivation is often tied to money, prestige, or happiness. Most people do not have a single reason why they do things. Getting clarity about your motives may be challenging at first and may require deeper thinking.

You will not likely achieve your goals without a specific plan to accomplish them. Effective work begins with clarity!
