In the past few weeks, we have all been amazed by the ability of OpenAI platforms like "ChatGPT" to transform the world of work. The announcement of "ChatGPT" comes alongside the news of massive job cuts in all the top tech firms. What does the future of employment look like in this rapidly changing landscape?
We were curious to find out and so we did some research, here's what we found.
After two long years of the pandemic, companies were eager to get back on track and started over hiring to meet their thirst for exponential growth. However with the decline of Covid, came the rise of AI which started to completely change how businesses operate. Companies struggled to provide the same job security, flexibility and compensation as they did during the pandemic. And this started to create a vicious cycle of layoffs to reduce the cost of operations.?
"Microsoft MSFT, which is reported to have laid off around 10,000 employees, practically simultaneously announced that it plans to invest $10 billion in OpenAI, the creators of the viral application ChatGPT. It seems likely that there is a business reason at the heart of the decision to invest a sum that would equate to $1 million per laid-off employee in an AI company." [Forbes.com, 2023]
When Elon Musk formally bought the social media company at the end of October 2022, he axed about 3,750 staff. There are assumptions that this is when the massive layoffs started occurring. Thereafter, Amazon laid off 18,000 employees, Google sacked roughly 12,000 and Microsoft laid off 10,000 staff members.
We can't pinpoint that it's solely due to the over hiring process within the pandemic era and the rise of OpenAI’s "ChatGPT" in the end of 2022, alongside other similar platforms like Microsoft's "the new Bing", Google's "Project Bard". However, its clear to see that Artificial Intelligence is taking a toll on job security and performance as well.
No technology in modern memory has caused mass job loss among highly educated workers. Will generative AI be an exception? - Annie Lowrey.
So how do you future-proof your career when AI is automating more and more jobs?

How can Deep Work help?
A pair of MIT economists, Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee, who in their influential 2011 book, "Race Against the Machine", provide a compelling case that among various forces at play, it’s the rise of digital technology in particular that’s transforming our labor markets in unexpected ways.
They rightly predicted that in the future, there will be 3 kinds of people who will prosper. The first is, owners of capital or those who have access to capital which has been the usual case. The second, is those who work in AI and Technology which again is no surprise. However the third category is interesting, it is those who will be a superstar in their field of work. Why is that? Because with the rise of open work platforms with upwork, there is almost perfect competition in the skills market, and what this means is that those who are superstars at what they do, have a higher chance of being recognised and valued. To become a superstar in a rapidly changing job market, you need to be able to master hard things fast, and produce work at an elite level. Deep Work is the skill that interlinks both these abilities to help you prime your mind to work at its peak and get your best work done.
Deep Work has therefor been labeled as one of the most valuable skills for the 21st Century. And that is why we are so passionate about helping you build this invaluable skill that will benefit you immensely in your career.
