That is what marketing means to us, just the process of selling and promoting it with competitor research and advertising. In most interviews for an initial marketing position, you will be asked, “ How will you sell this product?”

But how about “ Why is this product created?”

In 2012, Dr. Philip Kotler defined marketing as “The science and art of exploring, creating, and delivering value to satisfy the needs of a target market at a profit.

Basically, marketing starts even before creating a product, and that’s why every successful business owner and entrepreneur out there are marketers first and then thought leaders in their own niche.

Quote from Peter Drucker -The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well the product or service fits him and sells itself… The aim of marketing is to make selling superfluous.

Any product which has its inception to fulfill its customer needs and bridge the gap in the market, fits in the demand-supply cycle and sells by itself even with minimal marketing.?

Now you would ask, “ Then what is the need of the marketers or digital marketers?”

Before being a digital marketer, you need to assess the market gap that the product is bridging and position it while advertising that way. If the product fails to meet the criteria, you need to understand that it has no sustainable future. For the very same reason, many well-known brands have to reposition or rebrand their product and service to beat their competitors with a competitive edge.

Marketing is a scientific process of sending the right message to the right audience at the right time. Marketing includes selling as well as keeping the existing customers happy by creating proper communication with them. This ensures better customer retention for life and a sustainable business model.

Marketing is a game of perceptions, while the Product is the reality. Thus, marketing should not become more important than the product. However, marketing not just helps people discover the product but also creates an elevated perception about it. So, people feel really good when they buy such a product.

Marketing is the means for a business to establish itself as a strong brand in our consciousness in a particular niche with specific advantages and attributes.

Digital marketing vs Traditional marketing

While traditional marketing has a reach to vast audience, but it doesn’t allow personalized communication for the target audience, follow ups, usage of different customer touchpoints, audience retargeting, and natural sales. Digital marketing allows allow of the above. It is the best medium of marketing to reach the affluent literate population in the Indian market scenario with good spending power.
