How Full Is Your Cup
In a meeting yesterday with our leaders in CA, Mike Hardy and Rick Mount, they shared a theme with me that resonated; “you can’t pour from an empty cup”. You need to find ways to fill yourself up if you want to help others. I thought to myself; there’s my morning message for tomorrow.
So I woke up early as usual and sat down to write my brilliant morning message. I grabbed my phone, and it was as if someone shook my head and etch-a-sketched my brain. The screen was blank. My cup was empty.
I moved on my daily reading as many times; that’s what inspires me to write. So often, I read things that I am just called to share. Again, it was one of those instances when you spend time “reading,” but you are really just looking at words on the pages, and nothing is truly entering your mind. Empty cup.
Ok, I thought, on to exercise. I do some of my best thinking while enjoying a good morning work out. After a relatively pathetic 30 minutes, still nothing worth writing about. Still sitting there with an empty cup. I then decided a little road work was necessary, so I grabbed my headphones and headed out for a run.
As I started my run, one of my sons, Ethan, gave me a call to share a few core convictions he was working on. I immediately started feeling my begin to fill.
I love what he shared:
I believe in fairness. I don’t need a handout, just a fair shot. Don’t give me anything, just give me a chance to earn it.
You might outwork me tomorrow, but not today! Win the Day! As coach John Wooden says, make each day your masterpiece.
(My favorite): I believe you CAN outwork your doubts. Doubt and fear are simply lies that crumble in the face of persistent hard work. When all else fails, and you don’t know what to do, do something! Go to work. Don’t run from the darkness, turn into it, and run through it. The light is on the other side.
Bam! My cup was now full!
You can’t pour from an empty cup.
Sometimes we have to be open to other people filling our cups. Be humble, take the lid off and let other people pour into you. Also, you may be the pitcher that someone else’s cup is needing today. Pour into others.
God is good. He provides for us in so many different ways. Thank you, Lord, for my daily bread.
While doing a little road work, this song came on and reminded me just how good He is. Since you are working from home, feel free to turn it up!

4 年Nice piece Matt; I've got my daily tee time with the man upstairs to keep my cup full and my ball in the short grass. :))
