How to FTP

Having access to individual files stored on your website can be very handy when you want to make quick changes, upload or download pictures, etc. We prefer WinSCP for our own needs, but there are many others to choose from. They all work in a similar manner.
If you are using FTP for the first time, you may have several steps to set up your account(s). Most FTP programs allow for drag and drop functionality. Moving files is this easy.
When you start your ftp program of choice, the program will ask you for your login information. In most cases, you will only need to select the server’s protocol, enter the host name, username, and password, and then click Login. If a port is needed, use either 21 or 22.
Assuming everything is correct, the program will open a directory window. You can drag files to and from this window, other windows, and your desktop. To access additional operations, right-click any object, and then select the operation from the context menu. You can also right-click a file or a directory, and then drag it to another location.
One item to note is a caution. If you delete a file (or modify it incorrectly) there is no easy "undo" button. Changes are permanent.
Luckily for our own hosting customers, we maintain backups of all files. Restores may take a little time to perform, so be sure of your actions. You can really mess up your site here!
