How Founders and CEOs Can Begin to Think Collectivism

In recent years, there has been a growing shift towards collective thinking and collaborative approaches to problem-solving. As a founder/CEO myself, I had to intentionally shift towards a mindset of collectivism as there is a limit to what one can do alone. Seeing how this has benefitted me over the years, I’ll like to encourage other founders to embrace the same. Though difficult to embrace at first but indeed beneficial for companies looking to thrive in today's fast-paced and interconnected world.

Here are some practical steps that helped me embrace collectivism and incorporate it into my business practices:

  • Develop a Collaborative Culture

One of the most important ways that leaders can begin to think about collectivism is by fostering a collaborative culture within their organisation. This means creating an environment where employees feel comfortable sharing their ideas and opinions, and where collaboration and teamwork are encouraged and rewarded.

Research by Harvard Business Review found that teams with diverse perspectives and experiences are more effective at problem-solving and decision-making than homogeneous teams. Additionally, a report by McKinsey & Company found that companies with more diverse and inclusive teams are more likely to achieve above-average financial performance. By creating a collaborative culture, founders and CEOs can tap into the diverse experiences and perspectives of their team members to drive innovation and success.

  • Embrace Diversity and Inclusion

Collectivism requires a diverse range of perspectives and experiences. Leaders should strive to create an inclusive environment where employees feel valued and supported, regardless of their background or identity. This means actively seeking out diverse perspectives when hiring new employees, promoting diversity in leadership roles, and providing training and resources to support employees from all backgrounds.

Research by the Boston Consulting Group found that companies with more diverse teams have higher levels of innovation and creativity, as well as better employee satisfaction and retention. By embracing diversity and inclusion, founders and CEOs can create a more innovative and successful organisation.

  • Build Strong Partnerships

In today's interconnected world, building strong partnerships with other companies and organisations is essential for success. Leaders should seek out strategic partnerships with other businesses, nonprofits, and governmental organisations to create mutually beneficial relationships.

Research by Deloitte found that collaboration with external partners can lead to more innovation and faster product development. By pooling resources and expertise, companies can achieve more than they could alone, and make a greater impact in their communities and beyond.

  • Encourage Open Communication

To build a truly collectivist culture, leaders must encourage open communication at all levels of the organisation. This means creating channels for employees to share feedback, ideas, and concerns, and ensuring that all voices are heard and valued.

Research by Gallup found that companies with highly engaged employees have 21% higher profitability than those with low engagement. By encouraging open communication, founders and CEOs can improve employee engagement and productivity, leading to greater success for the organisation.

  • Focus on the Greater Good

Finally, to truly embrace collectivism, leaders must shift their focus from individual success to the greater good. This means prioritising social and environmental responsibility and seeking out opportunities to make a positive impact on their communities and the world.

Research by the Global Reporting Initiative found that companies that prioritize sustainability and social responsibility are more likely to attract and retain customers, as well as achieve long-term financial success. By focusing on the greater good, founders and CEOs can create a more sustainable and equitable world while driving success for their organisation.

In summary, for founders and CEOs looking to stay ahead in today's fast-paced and interconnected world, embracing collectivism is essential. By developing a collaborative culture, embracing diversity and inclusion, building strong partnerships, encouraging open communication, and focusing on the greater good, leaders can create a thriving and sustainable company that benefits both their employees and society as a whole.
