How to Foster Trust as a Leader

Developing and Equipping leaders to lead cultures that WIN, KEEP, and INSPIRE top talent
If you’re an avid reader of the Lead Up Newsletter, you know I preach culture, culture, culture. That’s because it’s the number one driver of just about any result or goal every organization is after.
?
Developing a sought-after company culture isn’t only up to the CEO or President, either. It’s up to anyone who’s willing to lead by example. No matter your title, your behavior has an impact on the culture of your organization.
?
One of the most important things to emphasize when trying to lead and encourage the behavior of others is trust. For people to willingly accept your guidance and example, they have to trust you.
?
So, let’s look at some tactical approaches for you to foster trust…
?
You can start by intentionally connecting with 2-3 people EVERY SINGLE DAY. I refer to this in my book, ‘Quit Losing Talent: Expanded Edition,’ as C-Squared Rounding. A.K.A. Connecting Conversations. Many leaders get in the habit of popping in at random, just to ask how things are going. If you want to build trust with your people, you need to connect. Be intentional in your conversations and show genuine interest in their concerns, requests, and perspectives.
?
Another thing you should implement into your daily habits is approaching every situation with a growth mindset. You lose a lot of trust when you don’t want people to catch on to your mistakes. If you approach everything with a growth mindset, you give yourself room to mess up, but stay open to advice and feedback from others. Don’t try to protect your reputation by trying to make others think you are perfect. Be open about your mistakes, and ask for guidance. This builds great amounts of trust between you and the people you are leading.
?
There are plenty of more tactical approaches to fostering trust that I’d love to share with you, so check out this week’s episode of the Lead Up Podcast to hear me and special guest Michele Thomson dive deeper into this topic!
