How to Forget about your Dead Ends and Move On

How to Forget about your Dead Ends and Move On

I always find myself back at the hairdresser when my life takes a turn. After I broke up with my first boyfriend, I returned to the hairdresser.

When the seasons changed, I found myself back in the black chair that has a foot pump to lift me up. It’s ironic how I ended up in a chair that has a foot pump “lift me up.”

After I graduated college, I returned to the smell of shampoo and the sound of scissors chopping away locks of hair.

The quick snip of the scissors cutting away dead ends gives me a sense of pleasure since I can visually see the past being cut away.

Inches of my hair lies on the floor. The hair I used to put in a bun or ponytail, maybe clip in a sparkly barrette. But all my mind reverts to is ABC’s show “The Shark Tank,” with Mr. Wonderful [Kevin O’Leary] saying, “you are dead to me.”

I look at the floor with my dirty blonde hair scattered in every direction, and proudly tell the crowd of hair that it is officially “dead to me.”

As if I am of high authority to pronounce the victim, my hair or my past, as “dead.”

This is always a great way to symbolize a fresh start for me.

Cutting off all the dead ends.

Starting new.

One action that symbolizes that it is time to move on…
