July – Is the PC running slow? Overheating? Here's some help from Cynetix IT Support
If you have upgraded to Windows 11, you may have noticed that your PC is running slower or hotter than usual. This can affect your productivity and performance, as well as the lifespan of your PC. In this blog post, we will explain some of the common causes and solutions for overheating and slow performance in Windows 11, and help you fix them. If this fails the Cynetix IT support team are here to help.
What causes overheating and slow performance in Windows 11?
There are several factors that can contribute to overheating and slow performance in Windows 11, such as:
Lack of ventilation
If your PC is placed in a tight space or near a heat source, it may not have enough room to dissipate the heat generated by the components. Make sure your PC has enough clearance around it and avoid blocking the vents or fans.
Dust build-up
Over time, dust can accumulate inside your PC and clog the fans, heatsinks and other cooling parts. This can reduce the airflow and increase the temperature inside your PC. You should clean your PC regularly with a soft brush or a compressed air can.
Issues with the hardware
Hardware components may be faulty or incompatible with Windows 11, causing them to overheat or malfunction. For example, if your CPU or GPU is overclocked beyond its limits, it may generate more heat than normal. You should check your hardware specifications and compatibility with Windows 11 and update or replace any problematic parts.
Running incompatible software
Some software applications may not be optimized or compatible with Windows 11, causing them to use more CPU or GPU resources than necessary. This can also lead to overheating and performance issues. You should check for updates or alternatives for any software that causes problems on Windows 11.
Outdated version of Windows
If you have not updated your Windows 11 to the latest version, you may be missing out on important bug fixes and security patches that can improve the stability and performance of your system. You should always keep your Windows 11 up to date by checking for updates regularly.
Using multiple high-end applications simultaneously
If you are running multiple applications that require a lot of CPU or GPU power at the same time, such as gaming, video editing or streaming, you may be putting too much stress on your system and causing it to overheat and slow down. You should close any unnecessary applications and limit the number of tabs or windows you have open.
How to fix overheating and slow performance in Windows 11?
If you are experiencing overheating and slow performance in Windows 11, here are some possible solutions that you can try:
Restart the Windows 11 PC
Sometimes, a simple restart can fix many issues by clearing any temporary files or processes that may be causing overheating or slow performance. To restart your PC, press `Alt + F4` on your keyboard and select `Restart` from the menu.
Make sure the computer is properly positioned
As mentioned earlier, you should ensure that your PC has enough ventilation and airflow around it. Avoid placing it near a radiator, a window or direct sunlight. Also, avoid resting your laptop on soft surfaces like beds or cushions that can block the vents or fans.
Check the temperature and fan speed
You can use a third-party tool like HWMonitor or SpeedFan to monitor the temperature and fan speed of your CPU, GPU and other components. If you notice any abnormal readings, you may need to adjust the fan settings or replace the cooling parts.

Free up disk space
Having low disk space can also affect the performance and temperature of your PC. You should delete any unwanted files or programs that are taking up space on your hard drive. You can also use the built-in Disk Cleanup tool to remove temporary files, cache files and other junk data. To access it, type `disk cleanup` in the search box and select it from the results.
Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows
Windows 11 has many visual effects and animations that can make it look more appealing but also consume more resources and generate more heat. You can disable some of these effects to improve the performance and reduce the overheating of your PC. To do this, type `performance` in the search box and select `Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows` from the results. Then, under the `Visual Effects` tab, choose `Adjust for best performance` or uncheck any effects that you don't need.
Pause OneDrive syncing
OneDrive is a cloud storage service that syncs your files across your devices. However, if you have a lot of files or folders in OneDrive, it may use a lot of bandwidth and CPU power to sync them constantly. This can also cause overheating and performance issues. You can pause OneDrive syncing temporarily or selectively sync only the files or folders that you need. To do this, right-click on the OneDrive icon in the taskbar and select `Pause syncing` or `Settings`. Then, under the `Account` tab, click on `Choose folders` and uncheck any folders that you don't need to sync.
Disable unnecessary startup programs
Some programs may start automatically when you boot up your PC and run in the background, using up CPU or GPU resources and causing overheating or slow performance. You can disable these programs from starting up and improve the performance and temperature of your PC. To do this, type `task manager` in the search box and select it from the results. Then, under the `Startup` tab, right-click on any program that you don't need and select `Disable`.
Check for and remove viruses and malware
Viruses and malware can also cause overheating and performance issues by infecting your system and running malicious processes or programs. You should scan your PC regularly with a reliable antivirus or anti-malware software and remove any threats that are detected. You can use the built-in Windows Security app or a third-party tool like Malwarebytes or Bitdefender. We talked about viruses and malware in this blog ( link to previous blog)
Restore your PC from a system restore point
?If none of the above solutions work, you may need to restore your PC to a previous state when it was working fine and not overheating or slow. You can do this by using a system restore point, which is a snapshot of your system settings and files at a certain point in time. To do this, type `recovery` in the search box and select `Recovery options` from the results. Then, under the `Advanced recovery tools` section, click on `Open System Restore`. Follow the on-screen instructions to choose a restore point and restore your PC.
