How To Fit In When You Move To A New Job

They say you were born to stand out, so why fit in. What I say is in order to stand out, you need to first of all find the gateway to reach to the top. And, that’s why you need to first of all fit in the system.

"Make it easy for your team to stay productive. Switch to ProofHub."

In order to support this claim, I’d like to share this small story -

He had ambitions to make it big in life like every other young man stepping to the corporate world. He was on the right track. Working hard to get what he wanted. His first job earned him the experience he needed to enter his dream organization.

He joined the new office gleefully. But, things were not like a fairytale that expected. In fact, it started more stressful with every passing day. He was not the jovial guy he used to be. From being someone who was always in high-spirits when it came to getting things done, he went on to become this gloomy and silent person who was not able to deliver even 25% of what was expected out of him.

Why all this? Because he could not fit in the new job he had joined. And, it had nothing to do with the kind of work he was allocated. It was more about the overall culture. He really could not cope up with the change.

The he in this story is my little brother Kartik. We discussed about it, and found ways that helped him survive the aftermaths of joining a new organization. Today he’s been working at the same place for more than a couple of years now. And, he does not have any plans to shift to a new place anytime soon.

How he managed to overcome the wrath? Well, here’s how -

Get to know people

Getting butterflies in your stomach. Feeling anxious and nervous. All these things are quite normal and happen to everyone on the first day of joining a new organization. The best way to deal with it is by breaking the ice and being the conversation starter.

You don’t want to be known as someone who hides behind the closet and does not like talking to others in your new organization. To make sure you stay away from this title, always be the first one to go and talk to people who are around.

A great way to begin is by introducing yourself. This is the best way to handle the awkward silence between you and your new team mates is to start with a greeting and follow it with your name. This small gesture can be the difference between a good start to your new job and a not so good one.

Remember the name

A big mistake to avoid when you are getting started in a new office is forgetting names. Try to be consciously aware of the fact that you have to remember the names of your new office mates.

When you use the name of a person while conversing it gives a sense of connectivity and gains the interest of person you are talking to. At the same it will save from the feeling of guilt and embarrassment for not having remembered the name.

I understand that it can be a bit tricky to remember so many names when you enter a new team. That’s why I’ve written try to put a conscious effort to remember the name, and you will be able to establish a connection with ease.

One day at a time

Most important of all - don’t rush. It takes time getting used to a new place, and new people. You cannot fit in a new place in just one day. So, take it slow.

Rather than reminiscing the past, look at the present. Don’t bring your past work culture into your present organization. Don’t ever say this how we used to do in my last office without knowing the why behind it. By saying so you are questioning their processes. And, that won’t make a good impression.

Ask questions to get answers, rather than waiting for someone to come and tell you. This will not only increase the interaction, but at the same time also help you understand the processes more clearly and in a better manner.
