How to be a "Fired Up! Ready to go!" speaker

How to be a "Fired Up! Ready to go!" speaker

By Obama’s own admission, he wasn't always an exemplary?public?speaker. One of the headlines following Obama’s first live presidential TV debates?against Mitt Romney in 2012 read:?"Republican candidate lifts conservative morale with a strong and forceful performance against a passive, lacklustre Obama."

Obama’s journey to becoming one of the greatest public speakers required?active?listening to feedback, self-awareness and a willingness to learn and grow. Here’s what we believe makes Barack Obama a master communicator.

Authenticity and Personal Narrative

Obama's effectiveness as a?compelling?communicator stems largely from his ability to weave personal experiences into his speeches. He noted, "I was a good communicator not only because I could speak well - some politicians can't speak well at all - but also because I understood my own story very well."

This self-awareness?around his own experiences?allowed him to connect with diverse audiences on a personal level instantly. By sharing his unique background as the son of a Kenyan father and a white American mother, raised in Hawaii and Indonesia, Obama created a narrative that resonated with many Americans' experiences of identity and belonging.

Mastery of Rhetoric and Delivery

Obama's speeches are often characterised by their exquisite use of rhetorical devices. He employs techniques such as repetition, alliteration and carefully crafted metaphors to make his points memorable and impactful. His famous "Yes We Can" speech is a prime example of this, using anaphora (repetition at the beginning of sentences)?to create a powerful?and easy-to-listen?rhythm. Additionally, Obama's delivery is marked by strategic pauses, varied intonation and a calm, measured pace that conveys confidence and thoughtfulness. These elements combine to make his speeches informative, emotionally resonant and inspiring.

Empathy and Active Listening

This was Obama’s triumph?as a communicator. His?unwavering?ability to demonstrate empathy and engage in active listening. During town halls and interviews,?if you watch past videos, you’ll notice?he often responds to questions by first acknowledging the speaker's concerns or experiences, showing that he has truly heard and understood them. This approach helps build?empathy,?trust and rapport with his audience. Furthermore, Obama's ability to address complex issues calmly, often using analogies or everyday examples, makes his communication?relatable?to a wide range of listeners. This?communication?skill allows him to bridge gaps between diverse groups and create a sense of unity.

Barack Obama is a testament to the power of self-reflection, hard work, and continuous?self-improvement. In his book "A Promised Land," Obama reflects on this commitment, writing, "I've never been a natural public speaker. I didn't suddenly discover a hidden talent for communicating when I entered politics. Like any other skill, effective public speaking requires practice and effort." This dedication to honing his communication skills, combined with his authenticity, mastery of rhetoric and empathetic approach, has made Obama one of the most influential and respected orators of our time.?

It was an excruciating and embarrassing spectacle. The gulf between what was on display last night, and Barak Obama, is unfathomable.
