How to Fire Up the Spark of Brilliant Inspiration
Laura Roberts
Dr. Laura Roberts has 30+ years experience as a dissertation mentor, successfully leading over 300 students to defend their theses.
I'm good at my job...I mean REALLY good...but, it wasn't always this way...I wasn’t very good when I started out 30 years ago.
The important thing to know is I am a REFLECTIVE PRACTITIONER and that has made all the difference. Every day, step by step, I developed and honed my teaching practice with a painstaking cycle of action > assessment > reflection > revised action > assessment > reflection > revised action over and over for 30 years.
When you do something for this long, you learn a thing or two about what works and what you need to do to teach complex ideas about research methods and statistics. There are specific activities and specific ways of communicating that really help students learn. However, clever activities and clear communication are not enough to be an effective teacher. It is also essential to infuse the curriculum with a genuine love for your students and for learning. In sum, I bring a love of learning, a love for students, and a lifetime of reflective practice to my mentoring practice.
If you feel you are plodding away at your dissertation...if you are NOT learning to love your topic and you are NOT becoming best friends with your “inner scholar,” you need to change something...you may need to have a heart to heart talk with your mentor to figure out how the two of you can work together to fire up the spark of brilliant inspiration. I wish you wisdom, hard work, and excellent guidance from your mentor so that you produce a brilliant dissertation that moves your scholarly field ahead by leaps and bounds (not feet and inches).
