How to find your purpose with Gina Bianchini

Hello Monday is LinkedIn News’ weekly career podcast hosted by me,?Jessi Hempel. ?You’ll hear from thoughtful experts, authors and business leaders about the changing nature of work—and how that work is changing us. Each week, this newsletter shares learnings and practices connected to the conversations.?Subscribe to the show's newsletter?here . This week our guest is Mighty Networks founder and CEO Gina Bianchini .

Here's how to plan our own Purpose 30

Before we dig into this week's conversation with Gina Bianchini , let's do a quick exercise. Take out a clean sheet of paper. Or, pull up the notes app on your phone. Don’t think about it too much. Set a timer for two minutes. Answer one question: what is your purpose??

What do I mean? Well, Gina defines it as "the clear positive intention for our time, talents, energy, and focus for our brief time on planet Earth."?

Write until the timer goes off, even if you aren't sure what you're writing. Just keep the words coming out. Ok, done? Now stop, put the pen down or the phone away, and listen to our conversation .

Wait, you ask, but who is Gina? Gina and I go way back. She's an entrepreneur who has been building social software since the early days, around the time that Facebook launched.?Once when I had a career crisis of my own, a coach urged me to tape photos of three leaders I admired above my desk. Gina was one of those leaders.?

Gina knows more than just about anyone I’ve ever met about how to build online communities that reflect people’s ACTUAL communities–how to make software that’s about people, instead of coaxing people to use software. I’ve always respected that.

Today, Gina runs the company she founded, Mighty Networks. It offers social software that lets people build their own communities. And we’ll talk a bit about that, but mostly we’ll talk about her new book. It’s called: PURPOSE: Design a community and change your life . ?In it, she explains how she has come to understand her own purpose, and then she offers a recipe for how we can use reflective tools to become more clear about the reasons that underly what we do and who we are in the world. Her premise is that so much of our relationship to social media lacks context. And Gina thinks we need to change all that. Quite simply, we each need to find our purpose, and we all need each other–in community–to do it.?

sometimes though, its hard to be with people, because every person has their own agenda. and agendas can clash???... purpose, social media, is good i think, you can interact with people, safely and stay on track, with your goals... also social media, is good , it keeps you in contact with people. most people for some reason, are alone. i actually healed from a serious illness, using a sewing machine. in 2010, i healed from grieving using a wire Fi, laptop. and recently, aloneness, my smartphone and ideap. how will you explain this???... ?? i think it depends on the person and their personality. ?? ??

Thank you Jessi Hempel and Gina Bianchini for sharing this exercise with your audience. I feel so strongly about helping others - organizations and individuals - to live their purpose that I left my corporate job 6 years ago and founded The Purpose Partners. Although I wasn't completely sure why I was so compelled at the time, it is through a series of self reflective exercises that I found what was at the core of my purpose. My Mom had to leave her teaching job after she and my Dad found out they were expecting their first child. (That's what happened in 1957, a woman couldn't teach in a parochial school if she was pregnant.) Fast forward 18 years and 6 kids later, my Dad had an affair with his secretary and my parents got a divorce. She had been out of the workforce for 18 years and she wasn't prepared. We experienced some really tough times in the next 10-15 years, always wondering how we were going to pay the bills. I have always been able to put together a plan to help me identify what's next in my life. I usually also have a plan B and C at the ready. I'm passionate about guiding organizations and individuals, preparing for what's next using the power of purpose, positivity/strengths, branding & strategic communications.

I have always felt my purpose has been about creating connections for others. I get joy in introducing people to their new best friends, I feel achievement by helping connect people to the important work they do and helping them see the impact they make. What a perfect time to reflect to see if I still feel that calling or if it has evolved over time. Looking forward to reading Gina’s book.
