Have you ever had a moment where you look around and wonder, "What's next for me?" Maybe it's a fleeting thought, or perhaps it stays with you longer—an aching curiosity about where you're heading after this part of life.
You’re not by yourself.
Many of us reach midlife and suddenly find ourselves in this vast space of change. It can be disorienting but also incredibly exciting. It’s like standing on the edge of a wide-open field, waiting to decide which direction to walk.
The truth is, finding a new purpose after 50 isn’t about a complete overhaul or a desperate scramble to replace the old.
It’s about discovering something that truly makes your heart sing.
Embracing the Transition: Why Finding Purpose After 50 Matters
Midlife is often seen as a turning point, and for good reason. We’ve done a lot—raised families, built careers, and overcame hurdles.
But now is the time to step back and think, "What do I want to do for me?" This isn’t selfish; it’s necessary.
As Michelle Obama once said,
"We need to do a better job of putting ourselves higher on our own ‘to-do’ list."
When we reach midlife, we also gain a deeper understanding of ourselves. Our experiences shape us, and now we can use that wisdom to decide what our purpose should be.
It’s a time to redefine what success and fulfillment mean—not by anyone else’s standards but our own.
The first step in this journey is simply showing up for yourself. Dig deep, and be honest about what feels right. Don’t overthink it.
As I always say,
"Purpose isn’t found in the distance; it begins when you decide to take the first step."
Start at the beginning, and let the journey unfold.
Practical Steps to Rediscover Your Purpose
Finding purpose isn’t about a grand revelation. It’s about tiny, meaningful shifts that lead to greater clarity. Here are a few simple but powerful steps to help you start:
Think back to what made you happiest. What did you love to do before life became so busy?
Maybe you loved to write, paint, volunteer, or teach. For me, it was photography!
Those old loves still matter. They are not just hobbies; they are pieces of what gives you joy and meaning.
Brené Brown once said,
"Unused creativity is not benign. It metastasizes. It turns into grief, rage, judgment, sorrow, shame."
When we suppress or fail to act on our creative impulses, they don't just disappear. Instead, those unexpressed passions can weigh us down emotionally, manifesting as regret, frustration, or self-criticism.
Letting yourself reconnect with what made you feel alive is an act of courage.
Honor those passions and give them space to breathe again, allowing yourself to feel the joy.

Reconnecting with your passions gives you the energy to move forward, but combining that with your unique strengths allows you to truly unlock your potential.
You have so many strengths developed over years of experience. These strengths are now yours to share in a new way.
Ask yourself:
What do I bring to the table that no one else can?
Maybe you’re a great listener, a creative thinker, or a born leader. Whatever it is, lean into it. And don’t forget to give yourself credit for what you’ve already achieved.
The self-doubt that creeps in often keeps us from embracing our greatness. Focus on your inner voice—the one that knows you are capable and deserving of this new chapter.
Now’s the time to try something different. Take a class, join a club, volunteer for a cause you care about. If you're curious about something, just start.
Oprah Winfrey once said,
"The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you’re willing to work."
You don’t need to know every answer—just take one step, and the rest will follow.
Remember, there is no shortcut, but there is a path that’s all yours.
Creating a Purpose-Driven Plan for the Next Chapter
Once you understand what gives you that spark, it’s time to make a plan. It doesn’t have to be complicated, but having a direction helps keep you motivated. Here’s how to do it:
And, in doing so, remember what Steve Harvey once said:
"You can't tell big dreams to small-minded people."
Find those who can match your vision.
Finding purpose after 50 is about permitting yourself to live meaningfully, on your own terms. It’s about rewriting your story with you as the lead character—choosing a direction that fills you up. And it’s about finding joy in the fact that you’re not done growing, not by a long shot.
If you’re ready to take this journey, start by showing up for yourself today. As I often tell my clients,
The only real way to find purpose is to step forward—no matter how uncertain the road looks at first.
and...
Your purpose is already within you. It’s time to live it out loud.
With purpose and passion...
Vibrantly,
