How to Find Your Path

How to Find Your Path

So, which way? This way? That way? The other way? Which way are we supposed to go? Do you find that nowadays, we get so much conflicting advice as far as what we should do, that it gets even harder to figure it out? Because it's unknown. We get people coming to us to tell us: "Well, with all my experience, you should never do this, or you should always do that." And everyone is saying the opposite of each other. It's confusing, because then we wonder: "What am I supposed to do?"

I just watched a video with Sunjay Nath, a very wise professional speaker, and he was just about to give us a whole bunch of advice as to how to build our speaking business. The thing he said before he started was super interesting. He said: "Please proceed with caution with my advice, because this is what worked for me. It doesn't mean that it's gonna work for you." I loved that! I love the fact that at the end of the day, whatever worked for me doesn't mean that it's going to work for you. I share my experience with you guys, and I tell you what worked for me, but Sunjay is right. You have to take all the information from everywhere and then decide for yourself. Take some time to reflect: "What is my path? How do I find my own path?" You're not supposed to be on somebody else's. You're supposed to have your own path. If you're just following what other people are telling you to do, then all of a sudden, you're in their path, not yours. You have to be you, you have to do YOU.

Here's something that I choose to do for myself. I always listen to people's advice. And then, I sit back and I let it work with my unconscious mind for a few days before I act on it. And then I realize: Sometimes, in the moment when the idea came to me, I felt like it was brilliant and I just HAD to do it. But three or four days later, I don't think it's such a great idea anymore for me, because in my own reality, it may not apply the very same way. I like to gather information and think about it for a while.

Another very important thing is that I compare myself with myself instead of comparing myself with others. I look at where I was before, and I look at where I want to go. And then, I notice my own evolution. Have you ever noticed that when you look at some material that you've produced a year or two years ago, you get kind of embarrassed? Sometimes, I watch videos of myself that I recorded five years ago, and I think: "Oh my gosh, this is crazy!" Even some courses that I recorded in March last year, that are just a year old, make me feel embarrassed. Do you know why? That is my way of looking back at my stuff and my way of knowing that I have grown.

If you look back at your month-old post or at the work that you did a year ago and you're still very happy with it and you're still doing the same thing, then you're not growing. I'm not saying that we SHOULD be embarrassed. That's not the right word. Just looking at our old stuff and thinking that it's very cute and funny, and that we're so much better now is the answer to: "Am I growing?" If you're still saying the same things and doing the very same thing as you were doing two years ago, maybe you haven't grown so much.

Maybe it's time to ask around: "What are YOU doing? What are YOU doing? What are YOU doing?" and take all these contradicting opinions and put them together to make your own path with. Reflect on them. Ask yourself: "Okay. Now, me. If I do ME, what do I do with that information? And how does that apply for me in my business, in my path, in where I want to go?" That was some very wise advice from Sunjay Nath. Approach with caution. Make sure that you are always taking care of what you want, and always make sure that you are taking some time before you apply somebody else's advice. Compare yourself with yourself, and look at what you were doing before. That's your proof that you are growing.

Now, ask yourself: "How am I going to be in a month from now, or in two months from now? How do I WANT to be? What is going to be the key element, maybe the course that you will take, or maybe something that you will do that will take you to that next level? Next time you're not sure where to go and you need to find your own path, compare yourself with yourself. Take some time before you use anybody else's opinions as part of your plan. And more importantly... You do YOU.

When I work with my clients, I make it about THEM. I don’t really give advice. I make sure to really understand THEIR reality and then I ask the right questions and give them tools so they can generate their own ideas and create their own path. If you are ready to the next level and just need an extra push that will help you focus on what is next for you, I will be happy to schedule a free virtual coffee with you to brainstorm together about what is next for YOU on your path.
