How to Find Your Number ??

How to Find Your Number ??

There's five steps to salary negotiation - Biggest Rule: Everything is A Value

  1. Resume: A Value
  2. Thing's You've Done: A Value
  3. Communication Style: A Value
  4. How You Show Up: A Value
  5. Who You Are: A Value

Each one starts a bargaining chip. We'll be breaking this up into 3 Parts ??:

  1. Different resume styles and what they communicate
  2. Values
  3. Creating/drafting your number

Part 1:

Let's Break down the Resume - the way it looks will determine a certain kind of value:

  • How sophisticated you are technologically - Communication Style
  • What you value (if you put it on the paper - you must think it's important)

Here are examples -

Does this look or feel expensive? Why?

Does this look or feel expensive? Why?

Each resumé gives you an idea of the kind of person - I want you to compare the two. Making each one requires a different skill and reasoning...

  • What kind of person do you imagine behind each one?

Resumé: do you feel like this communicates who you are? Key word: feel

- Make it

- Look at it

- Yes/no?

Thing's You've Done ?:

  • What shows or communicates you know this? Honestly..
  • If you say Marketing... shouldn't I see pictures or stories?
  • If you say Reception.. shouldn't I see you're a kind-empathetic person?

Don't discount who you are - not having training does not mean you're not valuable - which is why I'm going to show you how to communicate this:

Part 2 - Which leads into... Your Values??: The Person Behind the Resumé

What kind of person do you imagine behind this?

I imagine an older person who has values of pragmatism, intense experience, and has traditional values.

Vs.

What kind of person do you imagine behind this?

I imagine a 22-year old out of University who is good with technology.

Neither is good or bad - just useful in different ways. Which is why I say: don't discount yourself.

Part 3 - Okay, the real stuff... How You Show Up:

Paper can be bullshitted, who you are cannot - that is what they are ultimately paying for. ????

Skill (thing) + Person (how you are) = Value ??

*Do you like who you are as a person? This is what determines the level of confidence you'll be able to deliver in your role/service.

Once, you understand this you can ask the question: what do I need to be comfortable? And work your way from there.... this is where salary negotiations start.

Salary Negotiations - Are you confident about your number ??

  • Write down things you need to be comfortable (bear necessities)

Rent + Utilities + Stuff: If you don't have this your life falls apart. (that is a HARD line in the sand)

  • Add + Extra Money so you don't lose your mind: (this is a number that is nice to have...) "motivational money to do a good job" because money is supposed to be FUN ?? - that's what makes it exciting.

  • Third step, if I give you this number do you think you can deliver value, or does it feel fair? - this is what will ultimately determine your confidence.

Start there.

  1. Bills
  2. Fun money
  3. Confidence

I add this section for people who do not feel like they can start there... it's a journey ??

*Use whatever money you're able to negotiate for - and buy stuff you like. That will help you deliver confidence.
