When was the last time you truly felt calm?
It's a question that's been on my mind a lot lately, especially in a world that seems to be spinning faster each day. We live in an era where stress, burnout, and anxiety are almost expected, and finding calm feels like a distant memory.
Recently, I ran a workshop where I asked participants to describe what it looks, sounds, and feels like when they are calm. The results were a little unsettling. While they could easily identify stress, overwhelm, and anxiety, they found it found exceptionally difficult to describe what calm was for them. One person saying "I don't remember the last time I actually felt calm". It made me realise just how rare it is for many of us to experience genuine tranquility in our daily lives.
CALM is more than just a state of mind; it’s the foundation from which we can better navigate the complexities of life. But if we don’t even remember what calm feels like, how can we possibly cultivate it? Without that baseline of calm, we often find ourselves on a shorter runway to feeling dysregulated and overwhelmed. When that happens, our tolerance decreases, and our resilience starts to waver. That’s why it’s in our best interest to find strategies that allow us to return to a place of calm.
What does calm look, sound, and feel like for me? It looks easy smiles relaxed posture, leaning in those things rather than leaning out laughter even sometimes dancing , my tone of voice is gentle, compassionate, and softer. It’s when my thoughts are clear, and I’m present in the moment, fully engaged yet not overwhelmed. Those around me can sense it in my demeanor—I’m more patient, more attentive, and more empathetic.
But maintaining that calm isn’t always easy, especially when the pressures of work and life start to build. That’s why I’ve learned to lean on a few grounding strategies that help me reset. One of my favorites is box breathing. It’s simple but effective: breathe in for four counts, hold for four, exhale for four, and pause for four. This technique helps slow my heart rate and brings me back to the present moment.

Another strategy I love is reading. There’s something about losing myself in a good book that takes me away from the stresses of the day. Even just a few minutes of reading can help me regain my sense of calm and balance.
Note, that it isn't technology related. Because even though scrolling or playing a game can give the illusion of feeling relaxing, it is often more numbing (avoiding) that relaxing.
It’s essential to identify what works for you.
In our fast-paced world, finding calm is not just a luxury; it’s a necessity. It’s the buffer that allows us to handle life’s challenges without losing ourselves in the process.
