How to Find Your Hidden Potential
Paul Kearley
Working with organizations in solving their leadership and management effectiveness crises.
If you put a small value upon yourself, rest assured that the world will not raise your price.
Have you ever noticed that when you're searching for an answer to a problem, the solution often seems obvious in hindsight, as if to say, "Why did it take you so long to find me?" Of course you have. This is a common experience for most people.
Let's illustrate this point with an example: Ray. When I met him 15 years ago, he was content and successful in his job. However, things changed a few years back. His respected boss retired, and a new one arrived with clashing values. The work became dull, and Ray dreaded going to work. The environment turned negative, and people were leaving left and right. Ray saw these warning signs but ignored them, fearing a job change at his age. He also declined offers from other companies, believing he couldn't do anything else.
He was stuck in his comfort zone, afraid of losing control. Then, an acquaintance who started a similar business offered Ray a job. Ray accepted immediately – it just felt right. Today, he's far happier and more engaged in his work. He feels like he has a purpose again.
It's as if he suddenly became attuned to the whispers of his destiny. Once he was offered the job, it felt like a weight had been lifted and his eyes were opened to the opportunity that had been there all along. His fear of change had blinded him to his potential. If he hadn't finally listened to his intuition, he would still be stuck in a miserable job, believing it was his only option.
In almost every case of someone feeling stuck in their career, their emotions are holding them back. Our feelings create our comfort zone and can prevent us from reaching our full potential. Comfort and growth cannot co-exist.
When Ray told me this story, I thought of many people I know who feel stuck in jobs they hate. They believe they have no other options and must suffer until retirement. But that's simply not true. There are always other options, even if they aren't exactly what you envisioned.
The choice isn't always to leave. It could be about finding a way to communicate more effectively with your team, enjoy your work more, or transfer to another department. Remember, while the choice is yours, emotions can mislead you. Gather all the facts and options before making drastic decisions.

Once your desire for happiness outweighs the feeling of being trapped, the path forward becomes clearer. You'll become more confident in yourself and your abilities. Most people hesitate to make changes because they feel they need to know all the possible outcomes. However, sometimes you have to take a leap of faith and trust your intuition.
Success doesn't always require perfect knowledge. Could it be that you have untapped potential just waiting for the right opportunity? Is there a better future waiting to unfold? Don't wait for a crisis to force change upon you.
If you feel lost or lack a clear direction, carve out some quiet time for reflection. Write down the kind of person you want to be and the life you desire to live. Create your own options! Believe in the possibility of anything. With a clear vision and strong intentions, your brain will work towards making your imagined reality a concrete one.
Then, act as if what you imagined has already happened. Soon, you'll see the fruits of your imagination manifest.
Make this your best week ever!
