How to find work that I am passionate about?

Did you ever get this advice – Find a job that you are passionate about?

?

Or yet - Take the job because it is all about building up a resume.

These are just BAD career advise one can get.

Having a meaningful career brings richness to my life.

Meaningful work does not come from job description

?

Meaningful work comes from what one does with their job and how they change aspects of their job to feel connected and aligned with their values and purpose.

?

In the research about Job Characteristics Theory, You may be in a job that is well designed, but if it lacks motivation.

When employee cannot find their work motivating, the employee will not find the meaning and thus will not be engaged in their job and workplace ?– Hackman & Oldham (1975)

So how would you know if the job you are applying for will motivate you?

In the empirical research, when the work has 3 themes - sense of self, the work itself is purposeful and sense of balance can lead to motivation and thus meaning (Chalofsky, 2010).

Another way to find meaning is by helping others, which fills me with feelings of contentment and raises my self-esteem.

Although I recognize that not every job I have had has brought me feelings of accomplishment and satisfaction,

I also see that my attitude and approach to my work largely determines how I feel about the job.

You create the passion through work.

You create the passion by crafting the work - also known as Job Crafting - coined by Wrzesniewski and Dutton (2001).

Job Crafting means that employees may redesign their jobs on their own initiative with or without the involvement of the management.

So, helping others is the way I craft my job.

What motivates me, may be different for someone else and so the work that I love may not be the motivating for someone else and how it makes them feel.

Knowing that I can largely choose how a job makes me feel brings me reassurance and hope. Because of this, when I think about my job, my mind goes to a comfortable place.

Even on days when things may be hectic or annoying at work, I reflect on the positive aspects of my job and feel grateful to be there.

?

Being fulfilled in my work gives me feelings of dignity and self-respect.

Today, I intend to put my all into my work. In so many ways, my work fulfills me.

2.???What can I do to ensure that I feel a sense of fulfillment from my work?

3.???Do I actively pursue employment that will sustain me and make me feel content and happy? If not, why not?
