How to find a meal or groceries while also supporting Orange County, Calif. restaurants

Many restaurants are open for carryout, curbside pickup and delivery. And, thanks to ABC loosening up requirements in California, some establishments are also selling cocktails, bottles of wine and distilled spirits to go. (And yes, some are selling toilet paper, too. Meal & TP combos, abound).

I’ve compiled a list of restaurants serving carryout or offering delivery in Orange County. This is by no means a complete list. For example, I’m not including Big Fast Food Chains. Most have their drive-thrus open.

This list is geared to help indie restaurants and regional chains who don’t have the liquidity to withstand the devastation of this pandemic, which is now entering its seventh full week in California (as of April 27).

Please check restaurant websites and call ahead to double check information listed. Operational hours and menus can change on a daily, if not hourly basis.

Tips for Delivery, Curbside and Takeout: Download the following apps if you haven’t already: Grubhub, DoorDash, Postmates and Uber Eats. Most of these third-party delivery operators work with chains and independent restaurants. Grubhub works with many independent restaurants, and also offers pick up at quite a few places.

When ordering, try curbside/pickup first if you feel comfortable. Restaurants make more money on pickup/carryout orders vs. delivery on third party apps. Even better: If a restaurant is taking direct phone orders, go that route. All money goes back to them.

That being said, many of the third-party apps are working with restaurants/chains to offer free delivery, so do what makes you feel most comfortable. Restaurants need orders from all channels.

Here’s a list of local restaurants who are offering curated menus for delivery and carryout. Also, a few restaurants listed at the top are acting like co-ops, where you can order basic goods without going to the grocery store. If you know of more, please let us know. 

OC Baking Company in Orange turned its warehouse into an artisan pop up when COVID-19 forced restaurants to close dine-in services. As of April 27, the Artisan Pop-Up at OC Baking Company is now open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Various local artisans and chefs are selling to-go meals including Sessions (sandwiches), ADYA (Indian food), Crema Cafe (baked goods/pastries), Break of Dawn (stews), Cali Dumpling Delivery, BELLO by Sandro Nardone (family-size Italian specialty dishes), Hendrix Restaurant (whole rotisserie Holmes Farms chickens and BBQ baby back ribs/Fridays only), Miss Mini Donuts, Terrace Hill Olive Oil, Toast Kitchen & Bakery (soups, sweet and savory pies) and Villa Roma Restaurant (hand-made empanadas and paella ) Address: 1960 N Glassell Street, Orange 92865. Crema Cafe is selling select baked goods at OC Baking and is also setting up its own bread stand outside its wholesale bakery in Irvine. Hours: 9 AM - 1 PM. Slapfish - Huntington Beach, Irvine, Tustin, Laguna Beach and Brea (San Clemente currently closed) Open for take-out and delivery through Postmates, DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub.  Panini Kabob Grill at Kaleidoscope in Mission Viejo is selling Charbroiled Chicken Shish Kabob for $9.95; Family Combos, complete with four skewers and a choice or rice or salad, are $39.95. They are starting with a $25 minimum delivery order and serving most of Orange County.
