How to find hundreds of low competition keywords in less than 1 hour

One of the most common problems content teams and bloggers run into is being unable to find low competition keywords. When you're a new site with little to no domain authority, there's virtually no chance that you will rank for competitive keywords immediately unless your niche doesn't have much competition.

Although you can start writing content on broad keywords like "What is a CRM", it can take months if not years for you to competitively rank. In the meantime, you can gain a lot of traction by going after low competition keywords that many sites overlook. These keywords will allow you to gain some initial traffic while you build your topical and domain authority. There are endless ways to find low competition keywords, but I'm going to focus on these three quick and effective ways to do this.

  1. Competitor research

One of the best ways to find endless low competition keywords is analyzing the keywords that a competitor ranks for. This doesn't have to be a direct competitor, but looking up sites in your niche will allow you to find many sub-niches that you are not aware of. You can do this by going to Site Explorer on Ahrefs and looking through the organic keywords a site ranks for.

You will likely get thousands of keywords if the site is big and you can filter these keywords by keyword difficulty. Choosing a keyword difficulty of 0-10 will be the most helpful since those keywords are generally the least competitive. This will give you a few dozen keywords that you can write about. You can go to another site once you run out of keywords and rinse and repeat.

2. Google Autosuggest

Keyword research tools are not always accurate, so going directly to Google is another way you can find more keyword opportunities. With Google Autosuggest, you can see common search queries related to any keyword you type in. You can type in your main keyword and add a letter to see what Google recommends. This is typically based on what actual Google searchers look up.

Here's an example: if you're niche is cold calling, type "cold calling" + a letter to see results. This would look like this in the Google results:

Write down any keywords you might go after and start over with a new letter ("cold calling" + B). You can rinse and repeat this until you get enough keywords. If you're niche is competitive you can go more long-tail and add a word to your primary keyword "cold calling software + A). Make sure to that you use an incognito tab to get the most accurate Google Autosuggestion results.

3. Google Adwords Keyword Planner

Another great way to find low competition keywords is to use the Keyword Planner in Google Ads. This is an accurate way of gauging keyword difficulty because advertisers pay to use Keyword Planner for their paid campaigns. With Keyword Planner, you can enter your primary keyword (e.g. CRM) and Google will give different keyword suggestions to you along with the their assessment of difficulty and search volume.

Here's what you would see for something like "CRM"

You can filter your searches by difficulty and search for new keywords into Keyword Planner. You can rinse and repeat this whole process until you have hundreds of keywords relatively quickly.

These are just a few ways to do keyword research. You don't need to use all three, but just sticking to one consistently over time will provide you with more keyword ideas than you can possibly write about.
