How to Find and Get Your First 10 Agency Clients

There's never been an easier time to launch a digital marketing agency.
If you want proof, just look at me for example.
When I started my digital marketing agency, Twiz, I was a Junior in college.
I had no pre-existing network or entrepreneurial experience.
Heck, I had no outside financing or anything to help me scale.
All I had was an internet connection and a healthy dose of motivation.
In that first year, I was able to make $123k.
Last year (our fourth year) we did $1.72m in sales.
My goal with this article is to get you to quit your desk job and jump into being an agency owner.
Or, if you are already an agency owner, this is a fresh look at what I would have done to get my first 10 clients if I were to start over from scratch.
WHERE TO BEGIN
If I were to start over from scratch I would spend a lot more time building out a solid foundation.
When I was young(er), I was pretty impatient.
All I wanted was to see my new business grow as fast as possible. I thought things like branding and social media were a silly waste of time and resources.
It turns out, that even though I made a good amount of money the first four years...
I could have made a lot more if I had just STUCK to social media and building a great website funnel.
It's only been this year that I've started to really push social media, and that was a huge mistake.
Instead of running a multi-seven figure business, I would be running an eight figure business no doubt.
So first off, I would spend a lot of time reverse engineering the top social media influencers in your space.

NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK
You probably hear this a lot on LinkedIn, but don't sleep on networking either.
One of the first things my business partner, Christian, told me when we were first starting to scale my agency was that if I met 5 new people per day for 1 year I'd make $1m.
He had experience working at Mass Mutual and saw people go from brand new sales reps to top performers in less than 12 months.
And, wouldn't you know it, that's what happened to me too.
There was one thing, however, I feel I did well which helped accelerate my time to $1m.
I didn't just meet people: I also helped them scale.

How?
For every person I met, I would try to introduce them to another relevant person that I either met that day or recently.
Most service based businesses rely on networking, so this was an extremely fast way to build a name for myself.

Always lead with value first.
ARBITRAGE, ARBITRAGE, ARBITRAGE
One thing I would have also spent more time on is understanding arbitrage, both what it is and why it's important.
For those who don't know, the definition of arbitrage is...
An investment strategy in which an investor simultaneously buys and sells an asset in different markets to take advantage of a price difference.
In short, it's all about finding inefficiencies in the market and (ethically) exploiting them to your benefit and the customers benefit.
When you start to INGRAIN this word into your brain, you start to find applications of it everywhere.
You become WAY less concerned about "topline revenue."
You become WAY more concerned with "bottom-line profit".
Because, the more profit you can make while generating enormous returns for your customers the more rich you'll become and the faster you'll scale your agency.
So I would have focused on creating insanely good offers for people that they can not refuse.
I would have focused on making sure that I was NEVER selling anything commoditized.
