How To Find Fulfillment In Your Life.

I meet millennials and ask them, "how is your job going?", they respond by saying, " I hate my job, I hate my boss, I hate my company - they make us work more than 40 hours a week!" I meet senior citizens and ask them, "how was your 35 years of service?" they respond by saying, "it was alright, time flies very quickly." I see no excitement, or enthusiasm in their voice and body language. In both scenarios one thing is common; they both hate their jobs. The only difference is one had no option to quit due to financial difficulty and had worked 35 years in agony; while on the other hand, the other has a choice to quit, they do not have to feed family or have financial instability.
How do you find fulfilment at work then? What is the formula or steps to find meaningful work? The answer to this problem has three aspects. Number one is that you have to realize that it is ok to be confused or lost. We live in an information era - where we are flooded with information and choices. Life is not that simple as it used to be. According to an estimate there were 80 career or trades pre-industrial revolution; and today there are almost 0.5 million career options/jobs and trades. It is also normal to have fear, it becomes a problem if one holds to his/her fear and do nothing about it. You may have the fear of failure to start a business, fear of the consequences of loosing a job, fear of betrayal and q whole lot of other fears. Fears should be acknowledged and dealt with rationality.
The second aspect and perhaps the most important is to know your self. Often times we are so consumed in the race to succeed in life that we loose ourselves. We loose who we are, why are we here, what do we like, what do we dislike, what are values are, what are the things that are important to us and so on. Self-awareness requires time, thinking, and deep pondering in solitude. This is why in my trainings - I take my participants to the mountains, away from the hustle and bustle of the city life and help them dive in deep through meditation and mindfulness to understand themselves better.
Last, but not the least is to PLAN. If you are not planning then you are at the mercy of others. People will give you all sorts of advice, comments, information and a whole lot of 'bullshit' which will be according to their perspective and their world view. But if you have a plan in place, then you won't deviate from your track. You will stand firm and stay focused! For example, if you were to follow your passion which is to become an artist and make a living out of it; but you cannot quite your job because you need money for survival. Then you must have a realistic plan with timeline in place. Follow your plan with your job and exit when things are going as per your plan.
Life is short, and no one in the whole world knows how long they are going to live. So why waste time doing things we don't like, don't enjoy and don't excites us; rather let's do things which we love doing, enjoy doing and create an impact in our lives and the lives of others.
