How to Find Fulfilling Work

Globalisation and automation have meant that the job market is changing faster than ever before in human history. However, we shouldn’t worry about a jobless future, at least not for the next several decades. Because what will happen is that we are going to lose some jobs, but we are also going to gain some jobs. Therefore, the biggest effect of globalisation and automation is that most jobs will change in some shape or form. Getting people ready for this uncertain future and helping them adapt and keep up with the labour market changes that are coming will probably be one of society’s greatest challenges in the 21st century.?
My mission in life is to prepare people for the future of work, and in order to fulfil this mission, or at least come close to it, I am committed to address the following challenges:?
-Reskill millions of people around the world efficiently, inclusively, and at scale;
-Facilitate successful career transitions for people at every stage of their working lives.
The first challenge we are tackling at Generation - the organisation I passionately work for, which is the largest global employment program by annual volume that both trains and places people into life-changing careers that would otherwise be inaccessible. The second challenge I took upon myself to tackle by offering career coaching services to help people navigate their career transitions and ultimately get more meaning out of their work.?But what is a career coach and why is it beneficial to work with one from the outset of your career?
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics , we spend between 11-13 years working. This might not seem much at first, if we think that the average human life expectancy in many parts of the world is 75 years old . However, to put things into perspective, the only activity we spend more time on during our lives is sleeping, approximately 32 years. Thus, working is the activity that we spend the most time on during our waking hours, and so it is very important to make those hours both fulfilling and meaningful for our otherwise limited time on Earth. But many of us have jobs that are leaving us demotivated, drained of energy, and most importantly, not valued to our full potential. As a result we've seen since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic a wave of resignations across industries and sectors, and what McKinsey & Co. has called 'The Great Resignation ' is in my opinion more than a passing, pandemic-induced trend, but a sign of things to come, a 'new normal'. More and more employees will be?taking a time-out to tend to their personal lives or embarking on sabbaticals to reflect on what they want from a job and from their lives, and, consequently, more people will be in need of coaching, of someone to guide them in their career journeys. A career coach can help you identify the skills you need to find and keep a fulfilling job, now and in the future, and also to navigate the increasingly volatile job market, which will likely require you to change careers multiple times during the course of your working life.
So, how do you know if getting the help of a career coach is right for you? To help you figure that out, please read the following scenarios and see if you resonate with any of them:
-Are you studying in university and are wondering what career you want to pursue and what skills you will need to develop to get there and thrive in your career?
-Are you a few years in your career and are thinking about a career transition, but you don’t know where to start and how to successfully navigate the transition??
