In an earlier article I wrote titled ""I Love my 9-5" I talked about the love story I have with my current career.
In this article, I'm going to break down the essential steps necessary to help you acquire the same type of romantic affair with your daily income!
Break down your values
Everyones values are going to be different. Just like in the dating world - Some people want kids, some people want to travel, and lord help if you want both.
Fortunately, both can, and does happen in the remote 9-5 life. Safety net of a 9-5, with freedom of a nomad soul. A union thought to be so wrong, but one that feels so right.
You may not discover what your values are until you discover what your values aren't. Some people work better with direct management - others like to be in a management role. I discovered my main value in life was freedom - office life didn't suit me.
You may have to try a few things out before you nail it down - but here are a list of examples that may help in the process:
- Making a difference.
- Delivering quality.
- Being reliable.
Try to make a list and see what works for you.
Work more, Play less
It's not rocket science to know that we feel better when we contribute. Part of the reason you may not like your job is because you may feel you're not doing enough! Create a schedule that will allow you to get tasks done early. Accomplishing things in a timely manner will help you feel more in control, focused, and give you the ability to leverage time in favor of things you'd really like to contribute to. This also allows time for unexpected emergencies when you need to help others with projects. It may seem odd - but working to actually do more may be the cure for working less - any enjoying your job!
Leverage your Skills
Maybe you're thinking "I already AM working hard enough!!" and you're miserable about it. If you're already grinding away and just find lack of enjoyment from it - see if there's a way you can leverage the skills you'd like to and lessen the load you have.
What other areas of the company are hiring? Are you more interested in sales but you're in customs? Would you like to try for a management position instead?
Show interest in these roles by being proactive - Do work before it's told and use your career capitol to leverage your new abilities. Going to conferences, creating new initiatives, and even proposing a new position for yourself that shows true benefit to the company can all become the yellow-brick road to doing what you love.
Make time for Break Time
In opposition to "work more, play less" make sure you do schedule in time for self-care. We can often get so wrapped up in seeking the new position, working extra hours or picking up extra shifts that we get burnt-out and forget to take care of ourselves. You have to be able to find a work-life balance. Living a life that shows neglect-of-self will not benefit you in the long run - People assume how you take care of yourself is how you handle all things. So make sure to keep brushing your hair, have a bubble bath, and take a break once in a while to combat the day!
Remember that not all rules are hard and fast - If there's just one aspect about your job you don't like - Don't just quit! See how you can change it or make it work.
