It’s going to seem like I’m totally bragging on my son…and I am. You would, too, if you were me!?
I’m sure of it.?
My son’s first time kicking a soccer ball was at age 12. We signed him up for rec soccer and my husband was the coach. It was love at first kick. Since then, he’s become practically obsessed with the sport and has fixed his eyes and heart on going pro.
A former soccer player himself, my husband supports our son’s love of the game in every way. He’s gone above and beyond to find the right opportunities for training, practice, and tryouts, no matter how inconvenient it may be.??
Over the last year and a half, my son’s intensity and dedication to soccer (or futbol) has reached new levels. In order to have enough time each day to devote to training, he’s even decided to switch to full-time online school.?
Now 15, he feels increasing urgency to make the right team and league, which will move him closer to his goals.?
He’s gone to countless practices and tryouts all over the surrounding counties, searching for the best fit.
He’s dealt with a few knuckleheads along the way, but has managed to stay focused and undeterred.?
Several days a week, he wakes up early and heads out back to do self-led drills before heading off to work with his trainers or the gym with his dad.?
Dedication, right??
For a while, many of the coaches he tried out with told him things such as “you still need some work…come back next year…you’re not there, yet…”
While I’m sure he felt some discouragement, he only trained harder.?
And harder.
And harder.?
He never gave up.?
He never lost his focus, drive, or dedication to getting where he knew he could.?
This weekend, he guest played for the team he really wanted to be on. This was a team he tried out with previously and was not offered the spot he was hoping for. They thought he would be best suited for their lower level team.

He wasn’t having that so he politely declined their offer.?
Days later, the coach extended one more opportunity to show them what he had.?
My son was ready.?
Beyond ready.?
He played three games with them and on both days, he showed up and showed out.?
Two assists…and a GOAL!?
He was offered a full time spot on the roster.?
I think elated is a good descriptor.
He earned it. In every sense of the word, this boy has fought to be a better player. And he’s only getting started.?
I am one proud mom!?
He believes in himself, he knows what he wants, and he continues to put in an insane amount of time, work, and effort to be the best he can be.?
To reach his full potential.?
Although none of this would be possible without my husband’s equally insane dedication, he has done his part and has fully earned his spot on this team.?
He may have to work harder than some players to be where he’s at, but he’s got the passion and drive to outbeat most and that’s what matters.
I’m sitting here wondering how I can increase my own intensity to achieve my goals! I need to get on it!?
The lesson: Be fiercely focused on what you want to achieve and you WILL achieve it.
