How To Feel Comfortable Giving A Presentation On Video

You've probably anecdotally heard that some people are so afraid to get up in front of a group and deliver a speech, that they'd prefer death.

Not you? Perhaps.

I mean, Hey! You got things goin' on. My man! My girl!

Can you see yourself, now? Talking to that big crowd of people Oh. You are Crushin' it! They're eating everything you say up with a spoon!

Alright. Now, let's pretend that you've gotten so good at talking to your work groups, that you get volun-told to participate in a video interview.

First of all- way to go. That's what you get for being real good at your job. Didn't your mom ever tell you not to outshine those around you? Maybe she was right.

Or maybe, you need to learn real quick how the video game is played.

Here's what to expect:

  • Bright lights will be shined in your eyes
  • A stranger will be asking you questions
  • He/she will know what it is that they want you to say
  • They're not going to fill you in on what they want you to say
  • You have to guess

You're probably a little nervous. It's ok. You can tell me.

Here's some basics to get you through this:

  1. Prepare as best you can ahead of time. Ask what the video is about, and what the basic ideas are that they will need you to talk about. Then, do your research. Jot down notes. Practice talking about the topic.
  2. Don't ever try to memorize what you're going to say. A rehearsed speech is not the same as a prepared discussion. Aim for the latter, and forget about the former. A rehearsed delivery will almost always come off on video as robotic and unauthentic.
  3. Dress the part, and show up well groomed. Even if you're not normally meticulous about your appearance, this should be the time you get gussied-up. Consider getting your hair done a few days prior to the video recording. Have someone help you pick out an outfit- guys, I'm lookin' at you, here.
  4. If this short list isn't going to cut it... If you're terrified, then check out my free video tutorial: Why You Feel Nervous and Afraid in Front of a Camera. You'll get the whole rundown that I give my 1-on-1 coaching clients.

This video will be especially helpful, if your participating in marketing videos. Either for your employer, or if you're thinking about starting your own side-hustle.

Great article, and great advice. I've seen the most outgoing, funny, gregarious people turn ice-cold when staring down a camera.
