How Fear F*cked up My First Business

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away…that feels like a fitting start to my story because it does feel like another space and time.? Years ago I had a business in women’s health. I loved what I did, I loved supporting women and I loved it when my clients achieved success.? And I did OK, I had clients and an income.

But it was hard work.? It felt like an enormous effort to get every new client, and my income was sporadic. I never had enough clients or money.??

I had dreams for my business; of helping thousands of women, of making a positive difference in the world.? Of building a life of abundance and freedom for myself and my family.? But those dreams felt out of reach.? I just couldn’t get the business to where I wanted it to be, no matter how hard I tried.

The simple truth is, I couldn’t do any of those things because of fear.? Fear of talking about myself and promoting my services.? Fear of rejection, of people not wanting what I had to offer, of people saying ‘no thanks’.? Fear of not being good enough, of making mistakes, of looking stupid.??

I didn’t want to be pushy, or seem salesy.? I was too scared to ask for help for fear of looking like a failure.? My self-confidence dropped to an all time low, as perfectionism and imposter syndrome crept into my brain and made a home there.??

When I was working in my business, with my clients, I was happy.? But when working on the business, that was a totally different story.? I felt the shame of not being successful.? I was embarrassed whenever I talked about myself.? I was crippled with self doubt, disappointed with my constant inability to do what I said I wanted to do, and believed the voice in my head that told me I wasn’t good enough and I would never be good enough.??

The longer it went on, the more fearful I became.? I stopped reaching out.? I avoided meetings and phone calls.? I wasted time working on my website, or designing cool looking flyers because it helped me feel busy and kept me safe.?

?I was in a downward spiral of fear, shame, vanishing self confidence, more fear, more shame and even less confidence until I was exhausted, isolated and had no idea how to get myself out of it.? I was disillusioned, disappointed and distressed.???

I have real compassion for the person I was back then.? If I could, I’d go back and give her a massive hug and tell her things can be different and that everything will be ok.? Because they are.? I don’t even recognise her as me because of the transformation that I’ve experienced.??

I have self-confidence, self-belief and I trust myself and my abilities.? If I mess up or something doesn’t work, I don’t let it derail me, I just move on to the next thing.? I can thank my inner critic for it’s opinion and then ignore it.? I feel joy and ease working both in and on my business.
