Hi, there.
In August’s newsletter, we ask a question. Although there are unprecedented levels of job postings in both the UK tech industry, why do many professionals have to apply to dozens of positions, even in sought-after sectors like software development, whereas many employers complain about not being able to locate the right talent?
Expert career coaches argue that people still use the decades-old job hunting approach. This ancient job-hunters mindset seems to be not helping people reach the right roles. Well, it’s not you to blame; it can be tempting to stick with the tried-and-true things you have done over the years. However, integrating trending things as they come up will set you apart.?It is critical to be open and agile. The professional world is ever-changing, and anyone who gets lost in the weeds will be left behind. Being flexible will relieve a lot of tension and turn you into a valued resource. Agility is essential for being open. The world moves quickly; therefore, you must as well.
Here are a few agile tips for your next job hunting in the UK tech sector.?
To be successful in your job hunt, you must plan your job search carefully. That entails devoting time to the right stuff while disregarding harmful distractions. We suggest that you set up daily alerts. Never consider your job hunt to be a one-day process. Although it may appear more convenient to devote a few hours to your applications, this is not the most successful technique. You’ll be limited to a smaller number of opportunities and won’t be able to see new positions as they become available. So, target hours per day/week to spend for job hunting and set up daily alerts on your phone to avoid missing out.
2. Apply for jobs using different digital medium
In the last decade, finding a job in the UK has evolved drastically, with much of it now taking place online. According to a CIPD poll of recruiters, businesses are boosting their use of technology to entice prospects. You can increase the use of technology too. For example, make most of the job boards. List the relevant job boards such as LinkedIn, Totaljobs, Indeed, Reed.co.uk, UKhired.com, CV Library and Moster.com.?
Pro tip: keep applying for jobs that become available. If you are not getting a callback, don’t hesitate to contact the consultancy/company that posted the job advertisement.?

3. Directly connect with recruiters/consultants
Make a list of the tech recruiters/consultants you think are relevant per your profile. Upload your CV on their site, or apply to advertised jobs on their site. Remember, before you apply, customise your CV as per the job requirements. It’s better to create 3-5 CVs per your choice of jobs and forward them wherever required after adding job-specific skillsets.?
4. Approaching tech companies directly
Reaching out directly to specific organisations you want to work for can be a fruitful tactic. It implies that you are motivated and self-assured. Before emailing, research the company and select an appropriate individual to submit your CV. You can also monitor their social feeds to check if they post job openings and connect with their technology heads and recruiters through LinkedIn. It is advisable to create a sample message and forward it to all after changing a few details.?
You have nothing to lose if you remain professional while being proactive. The worst that can happen is that you get a response indicating they don’t have any openings right now. As a result, it’s absolutely worth a shot.
