Constantly evolving designs, massive global communities, and a significant presence on social media are just three of the commonalities shared by fashion and technology. However, the relationship between these two industries runs deeper than one might imagine.
As time progresses, these two powerhouse industries grow increasingly interdependent. Today, we witness events like Fashion Week leveraging the ability to livestream directly to consumers, and on platforms like Snapchat, brands offer AR filters that allow users to try on accessories virtually. The fashion industry continually embraces technological advancements to promote itself and engage its target audiences.
A novel and captivating approach to brand promotion through technology often has the potential to go viral. The use of TikTok in recent years has exemplified this phenomenon, with its over one billion users making it an attractive platform for brands. Over the past year, Uniqlo's crossbody bag went viral due to its impressive capacity. According to independent.co.uk, the hashtag #uniqlobag has garnered over 130 million views, as people worldwide covet the bag and share their experiences using it. This trend continues to gain momentum as more people purchase the bag and create their own videos.
However, it's important to note that the relationship between the fashion and tech industries isn't one-sided, as fashion also holds significance for the tech world. Popular styles and trends can significantly impact technology choices, from headphones and smartphones to even items as unique as light-up shoes.
For instance, for some, an essential aspect of wearing an Apple Watch is its compatibility with their personal style. This is evident in the variety of watch straps available, with a total of 13 colour variations, not to mention the different styles of straps one can choose from, individuals can therefore take their time picking out what fits their aesthetic and lifestyle. Even luxury brand Hermès has collaborated with Apple to produce a collection of straps for the Apple Watch.

In a similar and more personal vein, personal aesthetics plays a large role in tech choices. For instance, the availability of a wide range of phone cases highly influenced my decision to use an iPhone. Phone cases have become a constant fashion accessory and one that is easy to diversify, akin to a piece of jewellery.
It seems that as time progresses, technology could potentially become an even more integral part of our personal style. Could future eyeglasses allow us to scroll through our Facebook feed or take photos with a click? Although Google Glass no longer receives support, the possibility of another company taking up the concept remains. Or perhaps a completely new idea for wearable technology take its place? We have yet to reach the 20th anniversary since the first iPhone and at the time it was revolutionary. Who knows what’s round the corner and could soon become a new staple in our lives?
Is technology a central component of your personal aesthetic? Do you utilize technology to shape your choices? Feel free to share your thoughts.
