How To Not Fall Off the Bandwagon: A Three-Step Strategy To Keep You On Task
Carl Simpson
I help busy men over 40 get a grip of their bodies and minds to become the best version of themselves, without the BS.
You miss one gym session. You eat off-plan once. You let a bad day at work spill into your training.
And suddenly, you’re saying… “I’ve fallen off the bandwagon.”
Like it’s some mystical vehicle that you were riding perfectly until you tripped and lost all progress.
Bullsh*t.
There is no bandwagon.
There’s just you, your habits, and the decisions you make every single day.
And if you feel like you keep “falling off,” it’s not a discipline problem—it’s a strategy problem.
So, here’s how you actually stay on track, long-term.
Step 1: There Is No Such Thing as Falling Off the Bandwagon
Every habit—good or bad—serves a purpose.
Your habits exist for a reason.
And if you don’t understand the reason, you’ll keep repeating the cycle.
Action Task:
?? Write down the habit that makes you “fall off the wagon.”
? What triggers it? Stress? Fatigue? Boredom?
? What benefits do you get from it? (Comfort, relief, escape, social connection?)
? Now—find another habit that gives you the same benefits, but actually moves you closer to your goals.
Instead of “I need to stop doing this”, flip it to “How can I replace this with something better?”
Step 2: You Forget Who You Said You Would Be
Most people set goals once, then never think about them again.
They wake up and wing it, hoping they’ll stay on track.
But if you don’t remind yourself daily of who you’re trying to become, you’ll keep slipping back into who you’ve always been.
Action Task:
?? Write down your goal. Now break it down:
? What small daily actions move you towards it?
? Where does this fit in your daily routine? (Be specific—when, where, and how.)
? Create a way to track it. Tick it off, track progress, build momentum.
Because real progress comes from strategic confidence—proving to yourself every day that you’re moving forward.
Step 3: You Don’t Know Where You’re Going
Most people who “fall off the wagon” have no f*cking clue where they’re going.
They think consistency is the goal.
It’s not.
Consistency is a tool. The real goal is where it takes you.
And if you don’t have a goal that actually excites you, of course you’ll lose motivation.
Most people set boring, uninspiring goals like:
? “I just want to be healthier.”
? “I want to lose a few kilos.”
? “I just need to be more disciplined.”
Weak.
You need EPIC goals—ones that make you wake up ready to go.
Action Task:
?? Write down your goal—but make it BIGGER.
? Who do you have to become to achieve it?
? Who else does this impact? (Your family, your team, your future self?)
? What’s the version of you who’s already crushing this doing differently?
If your goal doesn’t light a fire under you, it’s not big enough.
The Real Difference Between Those Who Succeed & Those Who Stay Stuck?
It’s not discipline. It’s not motivation.
It’s having a system that keeps them on track—even when they don’t feel like it.
