How Facebook, Twitter, Social Media Algorithms work?

The world is the most reliable place when people socialize with each other in harmony and experience information toward everyone's growth. The communication channel nowadays is social media with the whole world connected thus we have to be cautious. We all know- "with power comes great responsibility". Whether it is Facebook or Twitter or any other social media all have to administer amidst its influence on people around the world and therefore algorithm plays a vital role. Then how does social media Facebook, Twitter algorithms work?

Facebook and Twitter algorithms are extremely complex in functionality with the multidimensional context of analyzing the post or tweet. At a high level, I have listed down the parameters based on which the algorithms are designed. There may be some additional parameters as the policy of social media keeps on changing, broadly covering the essence of it.

Every post is like a bomb, it may have immediate impact or maybe a dormant but yet can be impactful in the future. This implies each parameter have to be investigated and evaluated with all potential perspective of the circumstances it is been posted.

Parameters that are used in Facebook and Twitter algorithms

  1. Significance - How much significant or meaningful the post is? The “meaningful” interactions mean the ones that exercise further intention—that offer by “quality” moment essentially affirmed by family members and close friends connected
  2. Responsible - How much responsibility you and your post bring? will it make any impact on the people with whom you are sharing the post or tweet? There should be a sense of social ethics in the post
  3. Beneficial Interaction - algorithm estimates effective communications, for example commenting and sharing have more weight than likes and click-throughs. Likes are just a kind of passive communication.
  4. Disturbing - Any post that is having a language or word or picture or video that triggers subconscious disorder or shock or emotional extreme reactions are severely flagged by the algorithm as disturbing
  5. Similarly, Abusive and Hatred are also severely flagged by the algorithm. Abusive is more tends towards foul language whereas hatred is a very sharp curve towards one direction with a negative impact on people when shared. Also, the algorithm backtracks the person's profile who originated it. It also checks if any previous record of abuse or report raised

Layout of Algorithmic Approach

I have created the layout that depicts the algorithmic approach along with critical parameters

Once the post is advancing towards the social media platform its reaction-factor counts a lot. For example, LIKE LOVE icons and so on. LIKE icon has less weight than LOVE icon.

Post with more enhanced interactive comments, non-abusive and no-hatred text is treated as good-to-go post.

6. Engagement Factor - this again is one of the several important features of the social media post rank algorithm. Your post must be shared, re-share, most commented, these factors show a higher level of engagement

For the past few days, we have been observed that Facebook and Twitter have blocked hundreds of Chinese accounts over Hong Kong protest row. How does the algorithm decide to flag the account and then block? What is the process?

It is not a single-step process, it has various complicated functionalities of decision tree based on parameters discussed evaluates the severity level. Severity level helps in tagging the post as Constructive or destructive post. Natural Language Processing used for text mining to identify the occurrence of objectionable or abusive or inappropriate or hatred keywords. Then exercising the analysis of which category the post falls in. Finally, the judgment on the action against the accounts spreading unsocial and unacceptable messages. There are several classes of judgments -

  1. Your post will be restricted to a very fewer audience
  2. You can log-in and scroll through but can not perform any activity
  3. Account blocked for 12 hours or 48 hours and based on user's satisfactory justification provided to Facebook or Twitter with facts, the account may be enabled again
  4. Permanent blocked, no option to enable the account again. User's friends and family posts are tracked to identify if the same user opened a new account with the different name having the same relationships as previously blocked account

This is how the algorithms work on social media and keep track of the user's activity. Therefore it is very important when you post or share anything on social media. In fact, nowadays all emigration officials utilize your social behavior pattern before granting VISA to enter their territory. Thus be responsible, be alert and spread knowledge and happiness.

Thanks for reading the article, I trust you liked it. Stay tuned for forthcoming fascinating and informational topics.
