How to Exploit a Computer Guy

Do you know a computer guy? We sure do! Computer guys (sometimes known as nerds) are not always respected in the business world. Unless they are working for a tech company like Google or Apple, they are the odd man out in a company that is dressed for success and sipping Champaign with politicians and kings. For many bosses, 'the computer guy' is a derogatory term for someone who is anti-social, slumped in his cubicle, not willing to shake hands with the investors, unfunny, and may even come off as a bit rude. In reality they are likely introverted and focused, and for a company to not exploit them is a company that does not see their true worth. For the computer is not merely a good employee; he is usually the employee.

He is the first to work every day. He is the last to leave. He is the one who does not socialize, and thus is the one who does not need to utilize most of his coffee breaks. He is so focused on the job at hand, he sometimes goes over notes during his lunch break. He usually gets his work done ahead of schedule (and with minor mistake, which are easily corrected). If you are lucky you won't need to spend much time or resources in training him, for he will already know how each individual program works (and then some). If you come across a computer guy who doesn't know your system, usually one run through will make him an expert. In either case one he's started using a program, he won't rest until he's mastered it (as that is his interest).

All this is logical (as most you probably know), but the true hidden strength of the computer guy is that he may know how to run your company better than you. If you take him aside to discuss what you do, he'll likely have many suggestions for you. He knows the programs inside and out, and will tell you the faults with the current systems you use. He'll pitch ideas on how to do things better, and bosses would be sure to take these into consideration. Unlike other employees who are focused on the yearly Christmas party, the computer guy is focused on getting more work done within eight hours. His lack of communication throughout most of the day, you'll discover was just his way of focusing.

These are all the admirable traits of the computer guy. The problem is, if you don't use him properly, you might as well not be using him at all. He might as well not even be there. This is where most people fall into a trap. See, the reality of the computer guy is that he is everywhere. You know one (and so do I). Yet they remain unused and unnoticed. Their existence not being utilized because you don't know how to use him. That's where we're here to help.
