How the Experts use DISC to Address Turnover in the 21st Century
Did you know that the number one predictor of your company’s success lies in employee job satisfaction? Uninspired, undermotivated, and undervalued are some of the top reasons why employees leave good companies.
According to a 2021 study conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual turnover rate (voluntary & involuntary) is 57% across all industries. So roughly 1 out of 2 employees working today will be GONE one year from now. Why? They are dissatisfied with their jobs. And unfortunately, these are often your star employees.
Adding more fuel to the fire, Gallup estimates that U.S. businesses currently experience a cost of roughly $1 trillion in voluntary turnover. They report further that only 15% of employees are engaged at work and a whopping 51% of employees are currently looking for new jobs.
This problem has been further complicated by remote workforces and balancing ‘inclusionary environments’.
These costs don’t include other associated costs such as consuming valuable management time, customer impact, negative reputation, and low morale. In small firms, the impact can be much worse. Losing a single person puts an enormous strain on remaining employees and feeds into a vicious cycle of overwork, overtime, extreme dissatisfaction, and ultimately – high turnover.
Take a moment to assess the health of your company and ask yourself the following diagnostic questions.
What does your corporate culture reflect?
Scan the hallways of your company. Are your employees laughing, smiling, and communicating in a FUN environment they can make progress in OR are they silent, siloed, and tucked away in their cubicles? Do they feel valued, appreciated, and respected? Culture and behaviors are driven by leadership and can go a long way in reducing the rate of turnover.
If your employees took a POLL with one simple question: DO YOU FEEL SUPPORTED BY YOUR MANAGER? How would they answer? Think about it. Most employees don’t leave a company – they leave their manager. In fact, Gallup states that 75% of workers quit their jobs due to managerial conflicts. Your managers play an integral part in the success of your teams and your company as a whole. They handle assignments, motivate teams, and write performance reviews – so a poorly performing manager can have a profoundly detrimental effect on employee satisfaction - leading to higher turnover and reduced ROI.
According to a recent survey by the Society of Human Resource Management, RESPECT in the workplace is critical – with 72% of respondents signaling it is the most crucial indicator of job success.
To highlight how important this is, think about what caused you to leave a good job in the past. Were you and your manager too different? Was there a lack of communication, understanding, and conflict resolution? Was there a power struggle? Did your manager ultimately blame you? More importantly, what measures could have been put in place to change or avoid the outcome?
These exact same dynamics also occur within teams. According to Statista’s Job Happiness Stats, 60% of employees believe their co-workers are a top contributor to their job happiness. Have you hired top technical talent only to watch them suffer from major miscommunication and dysfunctional dynamics? Do your sales and closing numbers consistently fall short of projections? Does your company offer world-class customer service or do you secretly know it should be much better?
The answers to these vital questions reveal the underlying pathology of your company and foreshadow your success on every single level.
