How exercise boosts your self-esteem

Many of us struggle with low self-esteem, and in some it can be pretty debilitating. One way you can grow in confidence is through exercise. Working out has all sorts of positive benefits on mental wellbeing, helping reduce anxiety and giving you the mood boost you need to have more self-belief. Here’s how taking up exercise will help if you’re struggling.
Happy hormones and confidence kicks
Exercise releases the so called ‘happy hormones’ in the brain, including the mood-boosting Serotonin. These powerful chemical reactions reduce the feelings of anxiety which often surround low self-esteem, instead setting off a ‘high’ which stays with you long after your workout has ended. That elevated mood also raises your confidence. A successful workout leaves you feeling you’ve achieved something, and achievement can have an infectious quality to it.
Exercise can also help you ‘leave yourself behind’ for a short amount of time. When you’re focused on working out, negative thoughts have less space to churn around inside your mind.
A shortcut to success
Success in one area of life often spurs you on to success in other areas. Low self-esteem is all about not feeling you’re as successful as you should be, that you somehow don’t match up to other people. Many people who have suffered self-doubt have reported their feelings improved with regular exercise.
There’s something very cathartic to exercise. It’s a chance to escape your worries and use them as fuel for something more positive. Whether your low self-esteem stems from your appearance, work or relationships, there’s nothing like exercise to give you a mood boost and help you gain in confidence.
