Times are changing, and it requires us to change with them. From the 1950s to now, computing architecture has evolved from its pre-virtualization days of mainframes through client servers and the web to a virtual cloud database. The ‘cloud,’ as it has come to be known, refers to cloud computing whereby resources, software, and data are stored and can be accessed over the internet rather than within the confines of local hardware.

The shift to virtualization was and remains a crucial factor determining an organization’s ability to transform its operations. The perpetual evolution of cloud computing through the twenty-first century will stimulate an acceleration of builder velocity. This acceleration is concentrated in three key areas: network, application, and security transformation.?

Network expansion:

Accelerated cloud computing requires an expansion of network capabilities that can be used to increase the speed of information flow. As cloud computing evolves toward greater virtualization, network capabilities involving traffic shaping, data caching, and compression will be required as part of builder velocity. Traffic shaping, for example, will direct how builders assign priority to network traffic. Such priority shaping is necessary given the allocation of bandwidth that varies across network traffic. Additionally, because the evolution of cloud computing will increase the amount of data, builders will need to ensure data caching. This will ensure that duplicate data is cached, reducing data volume for remote backups. Finally, as part of the network acceleration required of builders during the evolution of cloud computing, software compression will enable builders to work with higher data sets. This, in turn, can facilitate a significant performance multiplier by transmitting fewer data to and from storage centers and networks.

Application Acceleration and Optimization:

Operating alongside an increased network velocity is application acceleration and optimization. With more applications moving to the cloud, builders will face the challenge of slower response times, leading to reduced business productivity and increased users. Given the cost associated with cloud computing storage, application acceleration and optimization can use ‘tunnels’ to optimize route traffic directly, thereby overlooking other routers to improve efficiency. To consolidate application acceleration, builders must develop protocol-specific code for each protocol in an application acceleration environment.?

As cloud computing evolves, so too will the need for greater security. Again, builder velocity will be stimulated to transform and safeguard security measures within an organization’s cloud database. Builder velocity will have to ensure that appropriate security controls are pinpointed and embedded in the code. Security-related changes implemented after the development of a cloud computing strategy will negatively impact an organization’s ability to respond to security breaches. Furthermore, as the evolution of cloud computing has brought on a multi-cloud strategy, an approach that uses multiple cloud computing service providers to give organizations different options and capabilities, a multi-pronged security protocol will be required. Such a protocol will accelerate builder velocity through a demand for multi-factor authentication and encryption.?
