How to Evaluate the Infrastructure Damage in Disasters? An Introduction to SIDE Method.

Evaluating infrastructure damages caused by natural disasters is crucial for mitigation or restoration plans. In our latest research paper, "A Systemic Stochastic Infrastructure Damage Evaluation Framework Incorporating Fragility Curves Reinforced by Network Reduction in Distribution Systems," accepted in IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery [1], we have developed a novel evaluation method named SIDE.

SIDE (Stochastic Infrastructure Damage Evaluation) method utilizes fragility curves for infrastructure components and reliability theory methods such as Reliability Block Diagrams (RBD) and network simplification techniques. SIDE models the impact of natural disasters on infrastructure networks, including distribution systems, and predicts the network behavior in various scenarios, such as earthquakes.

This interdisciplinary effort merges advanced fragility curves with a groundbreaking network reduction technique, offering new insights into the evaluation of infrastructure damage and enhancing recovery strategies. Our findings underscore the critical importance of robust infrastructure systems and the pivotal role innovative engineering plays in bolstering disaster preparedness and recovery initiatives.

We definitely welcome your thoughts, feedback, and opportunities for collaboration.
