How will EV help in achieving Net Zero Target 2070?
What is the Net Zero emission target for 2070?
At the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow in November 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India would achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. Net zero, or becoming carbon neutral, means not adding to the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. The action plan designed by the government to achieve a sustainable way of life is inclusive of 5 major points:
-By 2030, India will increase its non-fossil capacity to 500 GW.
-India will fulfill 50% of its energy requirement by making use of renewable energy by the year 2030.
-The total projected carbon emission will be cut down by 1 Bn tonne between now and 2030
-Indian economy’s carbon intensity will be dropped down to 45% by 2030
-India will achieve net zero target by 2070
?Contribution of EV in Net Zero Target for 2070
The consistent increase in demand of transport year-on-year is leading to rapid increase in carbon emission from vehicles that in turn is adding to the air pollution. There is an urgent need to transform the transportation sector by switching to alternatives to fossil fuel-based vehicles like biogas vehicles, electric vehicles and hydrogen vehicles. Out of these, electric vehicles have projected several advantages as they are more efficient and safe as compared to the others.?
?With the Net Zero mission of the Indian government for 2070, the government is working relentlessly to promote Electric Vehicles as they would largely contribute to reducing air pollution. It can prove to be a game changer and hence is inviting interest and funding from all corners of the world. India is working towards developing this sector on a large scale as it would give dual benefits- employment to rural and urban areas, and cut down carbon emission. Government is planning to set up thousands of EV charging stations in the coming years.?

?In 2021, 3.3 lakh units of EVs were registered in India that recorded a growth of 168% as compared to the year 2020*. For the net zero emission planned by 2070, increased adoption of electric vehicles is the only way forward. Apart from being a sustainable mobility solution, EVs are also filling the economic gap by providing job opportunities in urban and remote areas. The manufacturing units are employing skilled laborers and engineers, an increased emphasis is on hiring women and making them an important part of this change.??
Mobility is an important issue amidst rapid urbanization and growing population. However, with the coming of EVs, the government plans to provide a solution in the most sustainable way possible. Apart from personal vehicles, EVs are penetrating into public transport too.?
?Major reasons for EV adoption in India:
?-Environment Consciousness: Use of crude oil like petrol and diesel releases harmful gasses in the atmosphere. This constitutes majorly to air pollution that in turn results in poor air quality index that is quite harmful for mankind. Use of EVs will cut down carbon emission by a large degree. These will also cut down the carbon emission from the refineries as extraction of oil and the process of refining too contributes in polluting the environment.?
?-Rising Oil Cost: There has been a massive surge in petrol and diesel prices in the last one year, this has led to the majority of people intending to switch from pumps to charging stations. As per BS6 emission norms, the prices of ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles have also increased, this hike in prices is making people go after EVs.?
?-Mobility Challenges: With increasing population, the demand for mobility keeps multiplying each year. Public transport alone is unable to cater to the need of the people and hence EVs are believed to be a sustainable solution to the mobility problem.?
?-Women Participation: Women professionals are emerging as the preferred choice in India’s burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) industry with legacy companies as well as startups seeking better gender balance at workplaces. Women skilled in business modeling, design redevelopment, e-mobility and renewable energy management are being hired in the EV sector.
?There are several benefits that EVs popularity will reap for the future generations. The sustainability that it promotes will help us improve our air quality and cut down pollution by a major degree. At the same time, it will ensure a better and safer environment for our future generations. Replacing fossil fuels with electric vehicles is gaining momentum because of its multilateral advantages.?
