MY STORY
How to escape from employee to entrepreneur...requires making choices of what you want as well as what you don't want. Destiny is not a matter of chance, t’s a matter of choice. Destiny is not a thing to be hoped for, it is to be achieved. Let me share more about how making choices has affected my direction and ultimate life destiny.

After receiving my business degree, I left university and went into the world to find a job. Like most people, I began my adult life as an employee, devoting all my time and energy to my employer. I excelled early in my career, winning multiple awards for my work. I even received the highest award for performance in my organization, recognizing me for my leadership skills. But, year after year, budget after budget, I became more and more vulnerable to the higher powers. Working for a large organization, I realized I was just a number and that even I, with all my awards and accolades, could be fired at any time.
I had been working with my current employer for more than over 25 years, and for about twenty of those years, it was quite fun and rewarding. I was growing and passionate, full of belief that my work was, indeed, making a difference in people’s lives - and it was. I was racking up achievements and recognition, and winning international awards for my work. It was the highest I had ever been paid, and the job came with benefits, so things were sailing along. But one day, without warning, things turned. Overnight, the organization I worked for had a total change in policy and direction.
Success is determined by how you react to the negative stuff that happens to you
Timing is everything when it comes to success in your career. This is echoed by Minter Ellison’s chief talent officer Mary Lyras, “A philosophy that I have is ‘it’s the right place, for the right person, at the right time.’ The person could be brilliant, but they may not succeed in the environment at that point in time.” We all go through cycles of success in our careers. You just need to decide what you want… that is to stay or go!
The job I loved and in which I had become an expert was no more. My professional life changed in an instant. All the experience I had gained was never to be used again in the position I’d found myself. Because of this I checked out emotionally, and decided to leave the organization in the near future, and started planning my escape.

Escaping from employee to entrepreneur is not all sunshine and roses
Escaping from employee to entrepreneur is not all sunshine and roses. The planning of my escape from my job is both exciting and extremely challenging. I’m excited about the potential in my new life and freedom, the business opportunities, and the training I am doing to ready myself for the change. But the transition takes time… you need a lot of patience, persistence and positivity to stick through it.
Deciding to make a break opened my eyes to my interests and desires, the challenges at hand, as well as the training and planning I would need to propel myself in the shift from employee to freedom-preneur. I had little experience on my own, and limited time available to plan an enact my plan being that I was working 8-hour days. The challenge would be as tricky as planning a jailbreak from Alcatraz. Essentially, I had to develop a plan, learn what was needed to make a break for it, dig a hole out of the system, and find and align all the resources necessary to escape.
“Destiny is not a matter of chance; it’s a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved.” – William Jennings Bryan, orator and politician
While I was excited to break into my best life, a deep sense of unease came over me. This stress proved to be a constant battle that took a toll on my mental health. Two inner voices were incessantly chattering at me at the same time - one encouraging me, saying, “go for it! – you one get one chance to be your best,” and the other discouraging me, saying, “stop it! - you’re better off to play it safe.”
I started to psych myself out. Since I was risking it all, I would have to start all over again if I failed. Being a middle-aged man, and lifelong employee, I had a huge learning curve to be able to break out on my own, especially in a fast-paced digital economy run by millennials. I would be solely responsible for fetching my food, so to speak, every day. I had never been in this situation before, and my self-confidence wavered.

Make the choice to escape from employee to entrepreneur.. if you dare
It’s a fact that a complete transition from employee to entrepreneur will not happen as fast as you hope. It’s scary to continue the escape when you have yet to replace your income from your job. It takes a lot of faith, resilience and personal power. But the sooner you make the choice, the sooner you change your destiny.
I realized the work I did and the impact it made on society was just as important as how much I got paid. I didn’t want “just” a job anymore, and I didn’t want limits on my income potential and my freedom. At my stage in life, I wanted to do something significant that left a meaningful legacy.
I mustered enough courage and motivation to continue planning my escape. I wanted to take a chance at becoming a freedom-preneur. With this dream crystallized in my mind, I began to wake up early with excitement and go to bed late with enthusiasm as my escape plan started to form.
