How EPR Defines Sustainable Used Oil Management in India?

Sustainable Management for Used Oil: The New Type of Waste?

India’s commitment towards net zero emission reaches another step ahead with CPCB’s implementation of EPR for used oil, which comes into effect from 1st April 2024. The CPCB has mandated EPR on used oil to avoid the risk of generating potential hazards from unplanned treatment of spent base or lubrication oil in the country.

Currently, the Central Pollution Control Board has given a time of 1 year for every importer, manufacturer, or producer of used oil to obtain EPR registration for used Oil in India.?

Key Highlights on CPCB’s EPR for Used Oil Management

The applicability of EPR on used oil focuses on eco-conscious spent oil management in India to create awareness among the handlers of one such newly added waste category. Some of the major highlights mentioned by CPCB on applicable EPR regulations include –?

  • Sustainable management of base or lubrication oil throughout its entire lifecycle?
  • Recycling used oil to turn it into valuable waste?
  • Sustainable collection, recycling, and safe disposal of oil waste in the country?
  • Foster eco-friendly collection, and transportation to registered waste oil recycling facility?
  • Maintain a record of the entire amount of used base/lubrication oil collected, and recycled in a year in a dedicated EPR portal meant for used oil only?

Role Of EPR In Sustainable Used Oil Disposal

Often used oil is also known as waste or lubrication oil becomes unsuitable for further utility after repeated consumption. Moreover, the unplanned circulation of waste oil causes pollution in the ecosystem. That’s why CPCB has mandated some of these sustainable used oil management standards discussed below-??

  • Easy plans to manage the life cycle of used oil by promoting sustainability?
  • Collect, transport, and recycle used oil to prevent leaks and spills
  • Mandating used oil recycling like filtration, dehydration, and refining to remove contaminants
  • Reducing the production of virgin base or lubrication oil by conserving natural resources
  • Eliminating the risk of harmful substances released into the environment?

?

Conclusion?

The irregular circulation of spent base or lubrication oil often leads to environmental pollution and other health hazards.?

The growing awareness of sustainable treatment of waste oil followed by the applicability of EPR for used oil guidelines can lead India to zero-waste emissions in the future.?
