Which Equipment is responsible for harmonics generation?
Harmonics are the by-products of Modern facilities and Electronic equipment. These are often called non-linear loads.
- ? Adjustable Speed AC and DC Variable speed motor drives
- ? Controlled Rectifiers, Battery Chargers, Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) systems
- ? Phase controlled AC voltage regulators
- ? Arc Furnaces or Induction Furnaces, Welding Machines
- ? PLC, DCS and SCADA systems (SMPS)
- ? Solid State Heater Controls
- ? HVDC sending and receiving end equipment
Effect of Harmonics:
- ? Overheating of Generator, motor, transformer.
- ? Overvoltage conditions on supply system.
- ? Increased transformer losses (need to over-size)
- ? Nuisance tripping of circuit breakers
- ? Improper operation of microprocessor-based equipment
- ? Overheating and possible resonance with capacitors
- ? Re-injection of harmonic currents into the utility network.
- ? Neutral burnout.
- ? Insulation breakdown.
- ? Decreasing Distribution Capacity due to hot cables.
But every study comes at a cost, so how to ensure whether your plant should go for Harmonic analysis of or not.

6 年How to reduce harmonics in VFDs
Lead Electrical Engineer(ADNOC Approved)
6 年Probably this is due to high system current imbalance + high 3rd harmonic current flowing in the neutral. Kindly note that 3rd harmonic currents are additive (phasor addition) in the neutral wire. This is also evident from high %THDi as per the picture that you've attached.

6 年Sir I want ask one question regarding harmonics level.. which is as Que - why load manager is displayed very high THD % level of harmonics in Neutral wire...? Kindly see attached image also....
