How to enjoy your business and stay motivated in 2024.

As a small business owner, running a business can be both exhilarating and challenging, to say the least. A new year brings new opportunities and goals, but it's essential to stay motivated along the way and find some joy in the process, remembering all the reasons you decided to go it alone in the first place.

1.??? Set Realistic Goals:

There’s a saying I have to remind myself of from time to time – we overestimate what we can achieve in a year and underestimate what we can achieve in five years. Set realistic goals for yourself and your business, with achievable targets to keep you motivated. Break down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks, and remember to acknowledge small victories along the way. You need to remind yourself of your progress to maintain morale and help you enjoy the process of growing your business.

2.??? Celebrate Milestones:

Really take the time to acknowledge and celebrate milestones, no matter how small. Whether it's reaching a sales target, completing a successful project, or gaining a new customer, take the time to recognise your achievements and create a sense of positivity that will keep you going forward. Share these victories with your team, friends and family. Success is a great story, you can or share it on your business's social media platforms, so your customers and potential customers feel part of your story.

3.??? Connect with Your Purpose:

Reconnect with the reason you started your business in the first place, your passion, your why. What were your initial goals and values? What was the positive impact you wanted to make? Knowing the 'why' behind your business and the choices you made, can reignite the enthusiasm that often gets lost in the day-to-day running of things. Share your story and let that passion that fuelled your business inspire you and your customers.

4.??? Embrace Continuous Learning:

The business landscape is constantly changing, see keeping on top of trends in your business as priority and not something to do when you’ve got time. Make time to learn new skills, attend workshops, or join relevant online communities. Not only does this keep you informed, but you’ll find valuable support, as well as fresh perspectives and potentially innovative ideas for your business. It helps keep you motivated and can only help keep your business being the best it can be.

5.??? Cultivate a Positive Workplace:

Surround yourself with positivity. Yes, I know, that sounds a bit simplistic, but being around people on daily basis that don’t share your vision, or are not problem solvers, can make your job twice as hard. Share your values with your team and your suppliers. Create an environment that encourages creativity, collaboration and community. Whether you have a physical office or a virtual team, creating a positive, problem solving culture can significantly impact your motivation levels, as well as your teams and your customers.

6.??? Prioritise Self-Care:

Running a small business is demanding, but neglecting your well-being can lead to burnout and then there is no business. Make your self-care a priority. Schedule breaks, get adequate sleep and consciously schedule time for activities that bring you a sense of joy and calmness. A refreshed and energised mind and body will be able to stay motivated and find stamina for the long haul task of building a business.

7.??? Network and Collaborate:

Building connections as you grow your business is a great way to finding the support both professionally and personally you might need along the way. Attending networking events, joining business associations and seeking out collaborative projects, is always a really positive experience, even if it feels way out of your comfort zone to begin with. Connecting with fellow entrepreneurs allows you to share experiences, gain insights and find common ground ,it’s good to know you’re not the only one.

8.??? Delegate and Empower:

Recognise that you can't do everything alone – even when most of the time you do. Delegate tasks to your team or consider outsourcing certain responsibilities wherever you can justify it financially. Empower your team, you’ll be surprised how they rise to the occasion and feel an increased sense of loyalty to the business.

9.??? Celebrate Your Personal Growth:

Your personal growth is intertwined with that of your business. Never forget to reflect on how you've evolved professionally and personally throughout your entrepreneurial journey. Celebrate the skills you've acquired, the challenges you've overcome and the resilience you've developed – you started a business! Acknowledge your personal growth and enjoy it.

Remind yourself, from time to time, to enjoy growing your business and find joy in the small things, as well the big wins. Set realistic goals, celebrate your achievements, keep connected to your purpose, keep learning, create a work environment you love and prioritise your own self-care. If you can do all that, this year will be a year you can enjoy, no matter what.

My challenge to you, 3 actions you can take in the next week:

  • Create space in your schedule to review your business goals for the year, be honest with yourself about how realistic they are – they need to seem like progress and be achievable with the appropriate actions.
  • Create regular time for yourself, diarise it and make a commitment to yourself to stick to it.
  • Find a network to join that supports your business goals and provides a great support system for you.
