How to enjoy beer and stay cute
“A lot of times when people go into a situation where they think ‘Oh, I’m the authority’, out the window goes all the fun and all the joy of it. You have to convey the joy…” – RuPaul Charles
The field of beer is a tricky one. There are still many who associate beer with hooliganism and wreckless behaviour. As an industry, we’re constantly having to reinforce the wonderful complexity and variety that beer presents. In the world of craft beer it’s often said that beer needs to be ‘elevated to the status of wine’. I don’t agree with that sentiment.
Beer is an everyday beverage. It carries with it associations of camaraderie, leisure and fun. Yes, it needs to be better understood and appreciated but any attempt to ‘elevate’ it neutralizes the wonderful approachability that makes it so enjoyable. It should be celebrated for what it is. In my work, I endeavour to be playful, inclusive and open. Why? Because that’s what beer is to me.
This being said, beer needs to be poured properly to be enjoyed. This is the message at the core of my new YouTube series. Once you’ve gotten into the habit, you’ll never go back!
The craft beer movement has been in full swing for decades now and, still, there is confusion about how a beer should be poured. On one hand, there are still many who drink straight from the can; on the other, there are companies creating gadgets that are designed to engineer a good-looking pour. The problem with both of these approaches is that they prevent you from fully enjoying your beer and will leave you bloated (not cute!) Pouring beer is simple:
- Rinse the glass with cold water
- Start the pour
- Straighten the glass
- Leave some foam! - excerpt from Beerology
I hope you have as much fun watching my new YouTube series as I had making it! At the end of the day, the message is simple: However it is that you enjoy drinking beer, make sure you pour it out!
